got a used hp m234dwe and it says 'cartridge error' or just won't print at all

Yeah, this one's common. It's almost always a non-HP or refilled cartridge. This printer requires Original HP cartridges to work.

First, check the cartridge. Open the door and pull it out. Make sure it's an Original HP cartridge in official HP packaging. If it's a third-party or refilled one, you need to replace it with a genuine HP one.

If you have a genuine cartridge and it's still erroring, inspect it. Check that the orange sealing tape is completely removed. Look at the green memory chip on the side for any physical damage. If it's damaged, the cartridge is dead.

If that didn't work: The previous owner might have enabled a strict cartridge policy. You can check or disable it in the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS). Open EWS from a web browser using the printer's IP address. The default login is username 'admin', password is on the label inside the printer with the cartridge door open. Go to System > Supply Settings. Look for the Cartridge Policy drop-down menu. If it's set to 'Authorized HP', try setting it to 'off'. Click Apply.

Heads up: If it's an HP+ model, it will not function at all with non-Original HP supplies—no override.
