Diagnosis
This is not normal. The primary pressure control on your Hawkins Classic is the weight on the vent pipe (the "regulator"). The separate safety valve (or "safety plug") is a backup device designed to release steam only if the primary regulator fails or is blocked, preventing a dangerous over-pressure situation. If the safety valve is constantly hissing or spitting steam during cooking, it indicates the internal pressure has risen high enough to trigger this backup, meaning the primary regulator is not venting excess pressure as it should.
How to Fix It
First, turn off the heat and allow the cooker to cool and depressurize completely. Then, inspect and clean the primary pressure regulating system:
- Remove the vent weight (regulator) and wash it thoroughly. Check its small vent hole for any blockage from food starch or debris.
- Inspect the vent pipe (the stalk the weight sits on) on the lid. Ensure it is completely clear. Use a pipe cleaner or toothpick to dislodge any obstructions.
- Confirm you are not overfilling the cooker. For most foods, do not exceed the 2/3 full mark; for legumes or grains that foam, do not exceed 1/2 full.
- Before cooking, always ensure the weight is placed correctly on the vent pipe and is free to rock or jiggle.
If That Didn't Work
If cleaning the regulator and vent pipe doesn't solve the issue, the problem likely lies with the safety valve itself. The rubber gasket inside the safety valve assembly can harden, crack, or become misaligned, causing it to leak prematurely. You can try gently cleaning the safety valve components, but replacement is often necessary. Never attempt to block, modify, or use the cooker without a functioning safety valve. It is a critical safety component. If the issue persists after cleaning, discontinue use until the faulty part is replaced.
