Diagnosis
Steam escaping from around the lid rim indicates a breach in the primary pressure seal. For the Hawkins Classic, this is almost always due to a compromised sealing gasket (the black rubber ring) or the lid not being correctly closed and locked onto the base.
How to Fix It
First, ensure the cooker is cool and depressurized. Then:
- Inspect and clean the gasket. Remove it from the lid's groove. Check for cracks, permanent flattening, brittleness, or food particles stuck underneath it. Wash it in warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly.
- Re-seat the gasket correctly. Place it back into the groove, ensuring it sits evenly all the way around without any twists or kinks. It should fit snugly.
- Check lid alignment. Place the lid on the base. The arrow/triangle on the lid handle must align with the arrow on the base handle. Press down firmly on the lid and slide the lid handle towards the base handle until it clicks and locks fully into place.
If That Didn't Work
If leaks persist, the gasket is likely worn out and needs replacement—this is a consumable part. Order a genuine Hawkins 2-litre Classic gasket. Also, inspect the lid's safety plug (the rubber dot on top). If it is damaged, hardened, or pushed out, it can cause leaks; replace it if needed. Ensure you are not overfilling the pot; for foods that foam (like lentils), do not exceed half capacity.
Heads Up
Never force the lid open or closed. If it doesn't lock smoothly, check for gasket misalignment or food debris on the sealing surfaces. Always replace gaskets and safety plugs with official Hawkins parts to ensure proper fit and safety standards.
