Because this material is engineered for maximum filtration, it acts like a sponge; water becomes trapped in the interior core of the filter pleats. When you simply set the filter on a counter, the exterior dries quickly, but the internal core remains damp. If you reinstall the filter while the core is still moist, you will experience a "musty" smell during operation, or worse, the moisture will be sucked into the motor housing. This can lead to permanent motor failure or a "blocked airway" warning on the machine. The feeling that it "never dries" is usually caused by a lack of airflow through the center of the filter material, which requires a specific orientation and a minimum of 24 hours of ambient air exposure to fully evaporate.
How to Fix It
To properly clean and dry the filter without damaging the structural integrity of the fabric, follow these exact steps:
- Locate the filter at the top of the clear bin assembly. Twist the filter housing counter-clockwise to unlock it and pull it straight up and out.
- Rinse the filter under a cold-water tap. Avoid using hot water, as this can shrink the synthetic fibers and reduce suction power.
- Hold the filter under the stream and gently squeeze the sides of the filter. Do not twist or wring the material, as this tears the internal seals. Continue rinsing until the water flowing through the filter is completely clear and no longer grey.
- Shake the filter vigorously to dislodge loose debris. Then, press the filter firmly between your palms—similar to clapping—to force out the bulk of the trapped water.
- Place the filter vertically on a flat surface in a well-ventilated area. To accelerate drying, place it near a window with a breeze or a dehumidifier.
- Leave the filter to dry for a minimum of 24 hours. Do not attempt to use the vacuum after 4 or 8 hours; the center must be bone-dry to the touch.
- Once fully dry, slide the filter back into the bin assembly and twist clockwise until it clicks firmly into place.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Filter: If the filter has a permanent odor or the fabric has become "stiff" and grey even after washing, the pores are likely clogged with fine dust (like drywall or flour). - Schedule: Wash your filter once every month. If you have pets that shed heavily or a high-dust environment, increase this to every two weeks to maintain motor longevity.
- Check for "Tears": Before reinstalling, hold the filter up to a light. If you see any visible holes or rips in the fabric, discard it immediately. A torn filter allows debris to enter the motor, which is a non-repairable failure.
