The Newair AI-215SS is a countertop unit that relies on a closed-loop water circulation system. Over time, calcium and magnesium deposits from your tap water—known as limescale—accumulate on the evaporator pins and inside the internal tubing. Because this model does not have a dedicated "Clean" button on the control panel, users often assume there is no automated way to flush the system, leading to "slow ice" production or ice cubes that appear cloudy and brittle. The buildup occurs primarily where the water meets the cooling elements. If you notice the machine taking longer than 6-10 minutes per cycle or if you see white, chalky residue around the water reservoir drain, your unit has mineral buildup. This restricts water flow to the freezing pins, forcing the compressor to work harder and potentially shortening the lifespan of the refrigeration system. To confirm the need for cleaning, check the ice scoop area for slime (biofilm) or the water reservoir for floating white particles.
How to Fix It
Since there is no single-button cleaning mode, you must manually trigger the pump to circulate a cleaning agent through the internal lines. Follow these precise steps for a deep descale and sanitize:
- Empty the Unit: Remove all remaining ice from the basket and discard any standing water in the reservoir. Unplug the unit for 60 seconds to reset the internal logic board.
- Prepare the Solution: Mix a solution of 16 oz of a food-grade citric acid-based descaler (or a 50/50 mix of white distilled vinegar and warm water) with 48 oz of distilled water. Pour this mixture directly into the water reservoir.
- Manual Pump Trigger: Plug the unit back in. To force the pump to circulate the solution without freezing it into ice, press and hold the "Ice Size" and "Ice Making" buttons simultaneously for 3 to 5 seconds. You should hear the pump engage and see water moving through the evaporator pins.
- Circulation Phase: Let the solution circulate for exactly 20 minutes. Do not let the machine complete a full freeze cycle; if it begins to freeze the solution, turn it off and wait for the ice to melt before restarting the pump.
- Drain and Flush: Remove the reservoir and pour out the used solution. Fill the reservoir with fresh, distilled water and repeat the pump trigger process (Ice Size + Ice Making) for another 10 minutes to flush out all chemical residues.
- Surface Sanitization: Use a soft cloth dampened with a mild soap solution to wipe the interior walls of the ice basket and the rim of the reservoir. Avoid using abrasive sponges that can scratch the plastic, as scratches harbor bacteria.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Pin Scrubbing: If white scale is still visible on the metal evaporator pins, use a cotton swab dipped in white vinegar to manually scrub the pins. Be extremely careful not to bend the pins or puncture the refrigerant lines, as this will permanently destroy the unit.
- Hard Reset: If the pump refuses to engage during the button sequence, unplug the unit and leave it off for 24 hours. This allows any internal "ice bridges" (frozen blockages in the tubes) to melt completely, which often restores pump functionality.
- Reservoir Deep Soak: If the reservoir has a stubborn film, remove it entirely and soak it in a basin of warm water and baking soda for two hours. Scrub with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly before reinstalling.
- Water Filter Replacement: If you are using an external filtration system for your water source, replace the filter. High TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in your water will cause the AI-215SS to scale up every few days regardless of how often you clean it.

- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use bleach or ammonia inside the reservoir. These chemicals can degrade the silicone seals and contaminate the ice, leaving a chemical taste that is nearly impossible to remove.
- Distilled Water Preference: To extend the time between deep cleans, use distilled water instead of tap water. This eliminates the mineral source entirely.
- Frequency: Perform the descaling process every 30 days if using tap water, or every 90 days if using filtered water.
- Dry Storage: If you are not using the machine for more than a week, drain all water and leave the lid open. Storing the unit closed and wet will lead to mold growth in the reservoir.
