When the ice pile reaches a specific height, it breaks the IR beam, signaling the control board to halt the freezing cycle. If the machine continues to produce ice despite a full basket, the sensor is failing to register the "break" in the beam. This failure is typically caused by one of three things: a physical obstruction (such as a stray ice cube or mineral buildup) blocking the sensor lens, "frost creep" where condensation freezes over the sensor window, or the ice basket being seated improperly, which prevents the ice from piling up in the exact spot required to trigger the sensor. You can confirm this by observing the machine; if ice is piling up above the rim of the basket but the "Ice Full" indicator light remains off, the sensor is blind to the ice level.
How to Fix It
To restore the automatic shut-off functionality, follow these precise steps to clean and calibrate the sensor area:
- Power down the unit using the power button and disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet to prevent any electrical shorts during cleaning.
- Remove the ice basket entirely and empty all remaining ice into a freezer container.
- Inspect the interior walls of the ice drop area. Locate the small, clear plastic windows (the IR sensors) positioned on the left and right sides.
- Using a dry, lint-free cotton swab or a microfiber cloth, gently wipe the surface of these sensor windows. If you see white, chalky mineral deposits (calcium buildup), dampen the swab with a mixture of 50% white vinegar and 50% distilled water to dissolve the scale, then dry the lens completely.
- Check for any small shards of ice or plastic debris lodged in the crevices around the sensor housing. Use a can of compressed air to blow out any hidden debris.
- Ensure the ice basket is slid back into the unit completely. The basket must sit perfectly level on its rails; if it is tilted forward or backward, the ice may pile up in a "dead zone" where the IR beam cannot detect it.
- Plug the unit back in and run a cycle to verify that the "Ice Full" light triggers once the basket is filled.
