When the release button fails to function, it is almost always due to "vacuum lock" or debris infiltration. Over time, fine dust and larger particles migrate into the gap between the canister rim and the housing, creating a friction-lock that prevents the spring from retracting the latch hooks. In more severe cases, the internal plastic pivot arm—the piece that connects the external red button to the actual metal locking pin—has either snapped or slipped out of its track. You can confirm this by pressing the button; if it feels "mushy" or has no resistance, the internal linkage is broken. If the button feels stiff and refuses to move, the mechanism is jammed with packed debris or the canister is wedged too tightly against the seals due to overfilling.
How to Fix It
To remove a jammed canister, you must overcome the friction lock through a specific sequence of pressure and release. Follow these steps exactly:
- Place the vacuum on a flat, stable surface. Do not attempt this while holding the unit in the air, as you need leverage.
- Grip the bottom of the dirt canister firmly with your dominant hand.
- Apply a strong, steady upward pull on the canister. This relieves the pressure on the locking pins, allowing the spring mechanism to actually move.
- While maintaining that upward tension, use your thumb to press the red release button firmly. Do not "mash" the button; apply a steady, deep press.
- If the canister does not pop out, gently wiggle the canister from side to side while continuing to pull upward and press the button. This shift in alignment often clears the debris blocking the latch.
- Once the canister is free, take a dry toothbrush or a can of compressed air and clean the metal latch hooks on the canister rim and the receiving slots on the motor housing. Any grit left in these slots will cause the jam to recur immediately upon reinsertion.
If That Didn't Work
- The External Lubrication Method: If the button is stuck due to grime, spray a small amount of silicone-based lubricant or WD-40 into the gap around the red release button. Wait 5 minutes for the lubricant to penetrate the plastic pivot, then repeat the "pull and press" sequence. Avoid using heavy oils that attract more dust.

- Vacuuming the Latch: Use a handheld vacuum or a different vacuum hose to suck out the debris from the area around the release button. Often, a single small pebble or a clump of pet hair is wedged directly behind the button, preventing the full travel of the plastic arm.
