This buildup creates a "stale" taste and can eventually lead to a slow flow or a complete blockage of the needles. Unlike descaling, which targets calcium carbonate buildup in the heating element, a cleaning cycle (or cleansing brew) is designed to flush out organic debris and residual coffee oils from the delivery path. You can confirm your machine needs a cleaning cycle if you notice a bitter aftertaste, visible coffee splatter on the needle assembly, or if the water stream is no longer a steady flow but appears "splattery" or uneven.
How to Fix It
To perform a comprehensive cleaning of the K-Supreme, you must execute both a system flush and a manual component scrub. Follow these precise steps:
- The Cleansing Brew: Ensure the water reservoir is filled to the MAX line with fresh, filtered water. Open the handle and close it firmly without inserting a K-Cup pod. This triggers the "cleansing mode," and the four cup-size buttons will begin to blink.
- Initiating the Flush: Press the Brew button. The machine will prompt you to select a size; press the largest cup-size button (12oz) to push the maximum volume of water through the needles and internal lines.
- Disposal: Place a large mug or bowl under the drip tray to catch the water. Once the cycle completes, discard the water. This removes loose grounds and surface oils from the brew head.
- Manual Component Cleaning: Remove the water reservoir and the drip tray. Use a damp microfiber cloth and mild dish soap to wipe the interior of the reservoir.
- Needle Maintenance: Carefully lift the handle and use a damp paper towel to wipe the area around the five-needle MultiStream head. Do not use metal pins or needles to poke the holes, as this can bend the precision tips and cause leaks.
- Rinse and Reset: Rinse the drip tray and pod holder under warm running water. Reassemble the machine and run one final cleansing brew (as described in step 1) to ensure no soap residue remains in the system.
If That Didn't Work
If a standard cleansing brew doesn't remove the bitter taste or fix the flow, try these advanced methods:
- The Vinegar Shock: If you aren't ready for a full descaling process but have a stubborn clog, fill the reservoir with a 50/50 mix of white distilled vinegar and water. Run three consecutive 12oz cleansing brews. This acidity breaks down coffee oils and light mineral scales that plain water cannot move. Follow this with four reservoirs of plain water to remove the vinegar scent.
- Needle De-clogging: If water is barely dripping, the MultiStream needles are likely clogged with compressed grounds. Use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush dipped in warm water to gently scrub the needles while the handle is open. This physically dislodges debris that the water pressure cannot push through.
- Reservoir Deep Clean: If you notice a "slimy" film inside the water tank, fill it with warm soapy water and a tablespoon of baking soda. Shake gently and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing. This removes the biofilm that can contaminate the flavor of your coffee.

- Avoid Abrasives: Never use steel wool or scouring pads on the brew head or the interior of the water reservoir, as scratches provide breeding grounds for bacteria and mold.
- Water Quality: Always use filtered water. Using unfiltered tap water increases the frequency of required cleaning cycles and can lead to permanent needle clogging.
- Dry the Pod Holder: After manually cleaning the pod holder and funnel, ensure they are completely dry before reinserting them to prevent moisture from trapping air bubbles in the pump.
