The Newair AI-100SS is experiencing a "frozen-lock" state. The humming sound you hear is the compressor running continuously, attempting to lower the temperature of the evaporator spikes to freeze water. However, the machine has entered a loop where the ice has fused to the metal spikes or the internal sensor is misreading the temperature, preventing the unit from triggering the "harvest cycle." In a healthy cycle, the machine freezes the water, then slightly warms the spikes to release the cubes; when this fails, the machine continues to cool a block of ice that is already frozen, resulting in a constant hum with no actual ice production. This often happens due to mineral buildup (scale) on the evaporator spikes or if the unit was tilted during operation, causing water to freeze in a way that blocks the mechanical arms. You can confirm this by looking through the ice basket; if you see a solid sheet of ice covering the spikes or if the water in the reservoir is not being pumped up to the top, the system is stalled. If the water is pumping but not freezing, the refrigerant may have leaked, but the constant humming usually points to a mechanical or sensor-based harvest failure.
How to Fix It
To reset the harvest cycle and clear the ice block, follow these precise steps:
- Press the POWER button to shut down the unit and immediately unplug the power cord from the 120V wall outlet to kill all current to the compressor.
- Remove the ice basket and empty any remaining cubes. Use a plastic utensil (never metal) to gently check if there are ice shards stuck to the evaporator spikes.
- Allow the unit to thaw naturally for 60 to 90 minutes. Do not use a hairdryer or heat gun, as this can warp the plastic housing or damage the temperature sensors.
- While the unit thaws, mix a solution of 1 tablespoon of white vinegar per 1 quart of warm distilled water. Use a soft cloth to wipe down the evaporator spikes and the interior walls of the freezing chamber to remove calcium deposits.
- Drain the water reservoir completely and rinse it with fresh water to remove any sediment.
- Refill the reservoir with fresh, filtered water. Avoid using distilled water exclusively for long periods as the sensors need some mineral content to detect water levels, but avoid hard tap water which causes the scaling.
- Plug the unit back in and press the POWER button. Wait for the "Add Water" light to turn off and the "Ice Full" light to clear before starting a new cycle.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Water Pump Intake: If the humming is present but no water is reaching the spikes, the internal pump may be clogged. Use a pipe cleaner or a small flexible brush to clear the intake hole at the bottom of the reservoir. If the pump is humming but not moving water, the impeller may be seized.
- Hard Reset the Control Board: Unplug the unit and hold the power button down for 30 seconds to discharge the capacitors on the main board. Leave it unplugged for a full 24 hours. This often resets the internal logic and clears "ghost" errors in the harvest timing.
- Inspect the Water Level Sensor: If the "Add Water" light is flickering or staying on despite a full tank, the float sensor is likely stuck. Gently shake the unit or use a cotton swab to ensure the float in the reservoir is moving freely up and down.
- Verify Ambient Temperature: If the room is above 90°F (32°C), the AI-100SS may struggle to dissipate heat from the condenser coils. Move the unit to a well-ventilated area, ensuring there are at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides to prevent the compressor from overheating and shutting down the harvest cycle.

- Avoid "Ice-Mining": Never use a knife or screwdriver to chip ice off the evaporator spikes. A single scratch on the metal coating will cause a refrigerant leak, rendering the unit unrepairable.
- Water Quality Matters: Use filtered water. Hard water creates a white crust on the spikes that acts as an insulator, preventing the water from freezing quickly and causing the "constant hum" failure.
- Weekly Descaling: Run a vinegar-water cleaning cycle once every two weeks to keep the sensors and spikes clear of mineral buildup.
- Avoid Overfilling: Do not fill the water reservoir past the "Max" line, as this can cause splashing into the internal electronics and trigger a short circuit in the control board.
