The plastic-like or chemical taste in the ice produced by the Newair AI-100SS typically stems from "off-gassing" of the internal food-grade plastics and silicone seals during the initial break-in period. Because the AI-100SS uses a small-capacity reservoir and a recirculating pump, any residual manufacturing oils or chemical residues from the factory are concentrated in the water path, leading to a persistent metallic or synthetic flavor in the first few dozen batches of ice. If this is happening after a cleaning cycle, the root cause is likely "surfactant residue." If you used a soap-based cleaner or a strong chemical descaler, the porous nature of the internal tubing and the cooling evaporator pins can trap these agents. Because the AI-100SS does not have a high-pressure flush system, simple rinsing often fails to remove the chemical film clinging to the interior walls of the reservoir and the pump intake, which then leaches into every single ice cube produced.
How to Fix It
To eliminate chemical tastes and neutralize the plastic odor, you must perform a deep-system flush using a specific acidity-based rinse. Follow these exact steps:
- Empty the ice basket completely and wipe the interior of the unit with a clean, damp microfiber cloth to remove any surface residues.
- Mix a solution of 1 part white distilled vinegar to 3 parts warm filtered water. Do not use apple cider vinegar or cleaning vinegar with added scents.
- Fill the water reservoir to the "Max" line with this solution.
- Run the machine through two full ice-making cycles. Do not dump the ice immediately; let the machine complete the cycle so the solution is pumped through the evaporator pins and the internal lines.
- Discard the vinegar-flavored ice and the remaining liquid.
- Rinse the reservoir three times with warm water, swirling the water around to ensure it hits the corners of the tank before draining.
- Fill the reservoir with distilled water (not tap water) for the next three cycles. This helps "pull" remaining impurities out of the plastic and prevents new mineral buildup.
- Discard the ice from these three distilled water cycles. Only after the fourth cycle should you begin using the ice for consumption.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Clean the Intake Filter: Check the small intake area at the bottom of the reservoir. If there is a visible film or slime, use a cotton swab dipped in a 50/50 isopropyl alcohol and water mix to gently scrub the intake port. This removes the biofilm where odors often cling.
- Switch to Bottled or RO Water: If your tap water has high chlorine levels, the AI-100SS will concentrate those chemicals as water evaporates during the freezing process, amplifying the "chemical" taste. Switching to Reverse Osmosis (RO) or bottled spring water often solves the taste issue instantly.
- Air-Dry the Unit: If the unit has been sitting idle, a mildew-like plastic smell can develop. Unplug the machine, leave the lid open, and let it air-dry completely for 24 hours. Then, run a cycle with fresh water to re-prime the pump.
- Check for External Contamination: Ensure the unit is not placed next to strong-smelling items (like cleaning supplies or spices) in your kitchen. The AI-100SS vents air from the sides; if it pulls in scented air, those odors can be absorbed by the ice cubes as they sit in the open basket.

- Never use dish soap, bleach, or abrasive scouring pads inside the reservoir, as these can scratch the plastic and create permanent pockets for bacteria and odors to hide.
- Avoid using "hard" or mineral-heavy tap water; the AI-100SS is prone to calcium buildup on the evaporator pins, which can trap odors and slow down ice production.
- Always empty the reservoir and wipe it dry if you plan to leave the machine unused for more than 48 hours to prevent stagnant water odors.
- The first 5-10 batches of ice from any new Newair portable unit should always be discarded to ensure all factory lubricants have been flushed from the system.
