The Newair AI-100SS utilizes a specific freezing process where water is pumped into a series of aluminum evaporator pins. When the machine produces "thin" or "shrunken" cubes, it is typically caused by one of two things: a selection error on the control panel or a failure in the water-level sensing mechanism. If the machine is set to "Small" mode, the timer for the freezing cycle is shortened, and the pump delivers a smaller volume of water, resulting in thin, bullet-shaped ice. However, if you have confirmed the setting is on "Large" but the cubes remain thin, the root cause is likely mineral buildup or a partial clog in the water pump intake. When the pump cannot pull the full volume of water required for a "Large" cube within the allotted time, the pins freeze a smaller amount of water, leaving the center of the cube hollow or the overall size diminished. You can confirm this by checking if the water reservoir is draining slower than usual during a cycle or if there is a visible white scale buildup in the bottom of the tank.
How to Fix It
To restore the production of thick, full-sized ice cubes, follow these precise steps:
- Locate the "Select" button on the top control panel. Press it firmly until the indicator light shifts from the "Small" icon to the "Large" icon. Note that this change will not affect the batch currently freezing; you must wait for the current cycle to finish and the cubes to drop into the basket before the new size takes effect.
- Drain the entire water reservoir. Use a clean microfiber cloth dipped in a mixture of white vinegar and warm water to wipe the interior walls of the reservoir and the area around the intake filter to remove surface slime or scale.
- Perform a deep descale of the internal lines. Fill the reservoir with 2 cups of distilled white vinegar and 2 cups of warm water. Run the machine through two full cycles. This dissolves calcium deposits on the evaporator pins that prevent water from adhering properly to the metal.
- Drain the vinegar solution completely and run two additional cycles using only filtered water to flush out any remaining acidity.
- Ensure the machine is on a perfectly level surface. If the AI-100SS is tilted, water will pool unevenly on the freezing pins, causing some cubes to be thick and others to be thin or deformed.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Water Source: If you are using hard tap water, the mineral content can interfere with the pump's flow rate. Switch to bottled or distilled water for 48 hours. If the cube size returns to normal, your local water hardness is the primary cause of the thin cubes.
- Check the Air Intake: Ensure there is at least 6 inches of clearance around the side vents. If the machine overheats, the refrigerant pressure drops, and the evaporator pins cannot reach the temperature necessary to freeze a "Large" volume of water quickly, leading to thin, slushy cubes.
- Inspect the Pump Intake: Use a flashlight to look into the water intake hole at the bottom of the tank. If you see a buildup of "biofilm" (a snot-like substance), use a small pipe cleaner or a flexible brush to clear the obstruction, as this restricts water flow to the pins.
- Reset the Logic Board: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet for exactly 10 minutes. This clears the internal memory and resets the pump timing sequences, which can occasionally glitch and default to a shorter water-fill cycle.
Heads Up
- Avoid using soap or detergents inside the water reservoir, as the resulting suds create air bubbles in the pump, which leads to hollow or thin ice cubes.
- Clean the unit every 2-4 weeks with a vinegar solution to prevent calcium carbonate from insulating the freezing pins.
- Always use cold water to fill the reservoir; using room-temperature or warm water forces the compressor to work harder and often results in smaller, less dense cubes.
- Do not overfill the ice basket; if the "Ice Full" sensor is triggered prematurely by a pile of ice, it can interfere with the timing of the next drop cycle.
