Diagnosis
The "Add Water" blinking light on the Newair AI-100SS is triggered by a magnetic reed switch that monitors the position of the white plastic float located in the water reservoir. When the water level drops, the float descends; when it reaches a specific low point, it breaks the circuit, triggering the alert. If the machine displays this error while the tank is full, the float is physically stuck in the "down" position or the magnetic sensor has become desensitized due to mineral buildup. This most commonly occurs because of calcium carbonate deposits (scale) from hard water, which create a sticky residue on the walls of the float track. This friction prevents the float from rising as the tank fills. In some cases, a small piece of debris or a bubble of air can trap the float, or the float itself has become slightly warped, causing it to wedge against the side of the reservoir. You can confirm this by looking at the float while the tank is full; if it is sitting at the bottom or halfway down despite the water level, the sensor is reporting an empty tank to the motherboard.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must manually reset the float and clear any obstructions. Follow these precise steps:
- Unplug the AI-100SS from the wall outlet to ensure the sensors are fully reset and to avoid any electrical shorts during cleaning.
- Remove the water reservoir from the base of the unit. Pour the water into a sink and dry the exterior of the tank.
- Locate the white plastic float—the small cylindrical piece that slides vertically in a guided track.
- Using your index finger, gently push the float all the way to the bottom and then pull it all the way to the top. Repeat this motion 15 to 20 times. You should feel a smooth glide; if you feel "grittiness," there is mineral buildup.
- Take a cotton swab dipped in white distilled vinegar and scrub the interior walls of the float's track, removing any white chalky deposits.
- Rinse the reservoir thoroughly with warm water to remove the vinegar.
- Refill the reservoir to the "MAX" line, ensuring you do not overfill, as this can occasionally cause the float to jam against the top ceiling of the track.
- Slide the reservoir back into the base, plug the unit in, and press the "Start" button.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a deep descaling cycle. Mix a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts warm water. Pour this into the reservoir and let it sit for 30 minutes. Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the float area again. Drain the solution and run two full cycles of plain water to flush the system before attempting to make ice again.
- Check for airlocks in the pump. Occasionally, an air bubble prevents water from reaching the freezing plate, which can confuse the sensor logic. Tilt the machine gently from side to side while it is running to help the pump prime and push the air bubble out of the internal tubing.
- Inspect the reservoir seating. Ensure the tank is pushed firmly into the base. If the tank is slightly skewed, the float may not align perfectly with the internal sensor, causing a false "Add Water" reading. Remove the tank and re-seat it with a firm press.
- Check the float for buoyancy. If the float has developed a hairline crack, water may have leaked inside the plastic cylinder, causing it to sink regardless of the water level. If the float does not float in a glass of water, the reservoir must be replaced.
Heads Up
- Always use filtered or bottled water. Tap water containing high mineral content will lead to recurring float jams and will eventually clog the internal pump.
- Never use soap or detergent inside the water reservoir, as this can create suds that trap the float or leave a film that attracts debris.
- Clean the float track once every 30 days with a vinegar-soaked swab to prevent the "Add Water" error from returning.
- Avoid placing the unit in direct sunlight or near a heat source, as this can warp the plastic reservoir and cause the float to stick.
