Water pooling beneath the Newair AI-100SS is typically caused by a failure in the unit's gravity-drain system or a breach in the internal reservoir seal. Because this model does not have a built-in pump for drainage, it relies on a manual rubber stopper located at the bottom of the chassis. If this plug is slightly skewed, aged, or not fully seated, water will seep out slowly during the ice-making cycle, often appearing as a slow puddle that grows over several hours. Another common cause is the "overflow" scenario. If the unit is not placed on a perfectly level surface, the internal water sensors may misread the reservoir level, causing the machine to overfill. When the internal basin exceeds its capacity, water bypasses the internal walls and leaks directly onto the countertop. To confirm the source, dry the entire unit and the counter, then place a piece of dry paper towel under the drain plug and another near the base of the water tank. The first area to show a wet spot identifies the leak point.
How to Fix It
To resolve the leak and seal the unit, follow these precise steps:
- Power off the AI-100SS and unplug it from the wall outlet to prevent electrical shorts. Move the unit to a sink or a waterproof area.
- Turn the unit upside down or tilt it forward to access the bottom chassis. Locate the small black rubber drain plug.
- Remove the plug entirely and inspect the rubber for any cracks, dry rot, or debris (like mineral buildup) that prevents a flush seal.
- Clean the plug and the receiving hole with a damp cloth to remove any slime or scale.
- Re-insert the plug, pushing it firmly until it is completely flush with the bottom of the machine. If the plug feels loose, apply a tiny amount of food-grade silicone sealant around the rim of the plug before inserting it.
- Place the unit back on the counter and use a bubble level to ensure the machine is perfectly flat. If the unit tilts forward or backward, the water will pool against the seals and eventually leak.
- Fill the reservoir to the "MAX" line—do not overfill—and run a full cycle to verify the leak has stopped.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for a cracked internal water reservoir. If the plastic tank inside the chassis has developed a hairline fracture due to temperature swings, water will leak regardless of the plug. Inspect the interior walls for moisture. If a crack is found, the internal tank assembly must be replaced as it cannot be safely patched with adhesive.
- Inspect the water inlet valve. If the valve is sticking open, the machine will continue to pump water into the basin even after the "Full" sensor is triggered. This leads to an overflow that mimics a bottom leak. Listen for the pump running continuously; if it does, the valve is faulty.
- Examine the condenser coils and drip tray. If the unit is operating in an environment above 90°F (32°C), excessive condensation may form on the external cooling elements and drip down the sides of the machine, collecting at the bottom and appearing as a leak. Move the unit to a cooler, well-ventilated area.
- Verify the seal of the top lid. If the lid is not closing tightly, moisture from the air can condense on the cold interior walls and run down the sides of the internal tank, eventually pooling at the base. Ensure the lid is snapped shut and the gasket is clean.

- Always drain the unit completely using the bottom plug before moving it or storing it for more than 48 hours to prevent mold growth and seal degradation.
- Use filtered water whenever possible. Hard water creates calcium deposits (scale) around the drain plug and sensors, which is the primary cause of "false" leaks and sensor failure.
- Avoid placing the unit directly against a wall; leave at least 6 inches of clearance for airflow to prevent overheating and excessive condensation.
- Clean the interior with a mixture of white vinegar and water once a month to keep the seals supple and the water paths clear of debris.
