Diagnosis
The loud grinding or "chewing" noise in the hOmeLabs HME010019N is caused by a mechanical interference between the ice ejection arm (the plastic scoop) and the ice basket or accumulated ice cubes. Specifically, the motor-driven arm is designed to pivot and push the frozen cubes out of the evaporator pins. When the ice basket is overfilled, or if cubes have bridged (clumped together) near the top of the bin, the arm cannot complete its full rotational arc. This results in the motor forcing the arm to grind against the plastic rim of the basket or crush the edges of existing ice cubes. Because the motor has high torque to ensure ice is ejected, it will continue to push even if it meets resistance, creating a sound that mimics plastic being chewed. You can confirm this by observing the arm during a drop cycle; if the arm vibrates or stutters before the ice falls, there is a physical obstruction in the bin area.
How to Fix It
To resolve the grinding noise and prevent damage to the ejection motor, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the unit and unplug it from the wall outlet to prevent accidental activation during cleaning.
- Remove the ice basket entirely. Check the bottom of the basket for any stray ice shards or debris that may be preventing the basket from seating flush against the base of the unit.
- Empty the basket completely. Do not simply scoop from the top; remove all ice to ensure the "bridge" of cubes at the bottom is broken.
- Inspect the clear plastic ejection arm located just above the basket. Ensure there are no frozen shards of ice stuck to the arm itself or wedged between the arm and the evaporator plate.
- Reinsert the basket, ensuring it clicks firmly into place and sits perfectly level. If the basket is tilted even a few millimeters, the arm will strike the rim.
- Plug the unit back in and initiate a new cycle. Monitor the first three drops to ensure the arm clears the basket rim with at least 5mm of clearance.
- Strictly adhere to the "MAX" fill line on the side of the basket. Once the ice reaches the halfway point of the basket's height, begin removing ice to keep the area clear for the ejection arm.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for "Ice Bridging." Sometimes ice cubes fuse together into a solid block at the bottom of the basket. This creates a false floor that pushes the remaining ice higher than the MAX line, causing the arm to grind. Use a plastic utensil to break up any fused blocks at the bottom of the bin.
- Inspect the Ejection Arm for Warping. If the unit was dropped or hit, the plastic arm may be slightly bent. Check for stress marks (white discoloration in the clear plastic). If the arm is warped, it will strike the basket regardless of how empty it is. You may need to gently align the arm if it has shifted on its pivot.
- Clean the Evaporator Pins. Mineral buildup (scale) on the metal pins can cause ice cubes to stick. If a cube doesn't release cleanly, the arm has to apply more force, which can cause the motor to strain and make a grinding sound. Use a mixture of white vinegar and water to descale the pins.
- Verify the Leveling of the Machine. If the HME010019N is sitting on an uneven counter, the entire chassis can lean. This shifts the alignment of the basket relative to the arm. Use a bubble level to ensure the machine is perfectly flat.

- Avoid using metal utensils to clear ice from the bin, as scratching the plastic can create burrs that catch on the ejection arm, leading to more noise.
- Run a cleaning cycle with a mild citric acid solution every 30 days to prevent calcium buildup on the evaporator, which ensures the ice releases smoothly without requiring excessive force from the arm.
- Do not leave the unit unplugged in a warm room with ice still in the basket; the melting and refreezing process can "glue" the basket to the frame, causing misalignment when you next use it.
- Always ensure the lid is closed fully during operation; an open or skewed lid can sometimes put pressure on the internal housing, shifting the arm's trajectory.
