Diagnosis
Attempting to open your Presto 6-Quart pressure cooker by simply lifting the rocking regulator (weight) off the vent pipe is unsafe. The lid is mechanically locked by the internal steam pressure pushing it against the pot's sealing rim. The regulator is just one component of the pressure control and release system; removing it does not disengage the lid lock.
How to Fix It
You must fully depressurize the cooker before opening. Follow these steps:
- Turn off the heat source.
- Choose a release method: For Natural Release, let the cooker sit undisturbed. Pressure drops as the food cools. For Quick Release, carefully move the cooker to a sink and run cool (not cold) water over the lid only, avoiding the regulator and handles.
- Watch the Lid Lock Indicator (a small metal pin near the handle). When it drops down completely, internal pressure is zero.
- Only then should you gently nudge the regulator to ensure it's loose, then turn the lid counterclockwise to unlock and open it.
If That Didn't Work
If the lid remains stuck after the indicator drops, ensure all pressure is gone by gently trying to lift the regulator; no steam should hiss. If it's still stuck, it may be due to food residue. Ensure the cooker is cool, then gently twist the lid back and forth while lifting. Never force it. For persistent sticking, clean the lid rim and pot sealing groove thoroughly.

Forcing a pressurized cooker open can cause a violent eruption of scalding steam and food, leading to severe burns. Always wait for the lid lock indicator to drop as your primary safety signal.
