Diagnosis
The lid lock on your Presto 01264 is a safety mechanism that engages automatically only when sufficient pressure (around 4-5 psi) builds inside the pot. If the lid won't lock at all, the core issue is a failure to build that initial pressure. This is almost always caused by a compromised seal, an obstruction in the pressure release pathway, or an incorrect part installation.
How to Fix It
- Inspect the silicone sealing ring (gasket) inside the lid. Ensure it is fully seated in its groove, is clean, flexible, and free of cracks or food debris. A hardened, cracked, or misaligned gasket is the most common culprit.
- Verify the over-pressure plug (a rubber button on the underside of the lid) and the pressure regulator (the weighted "jiggler") are both clean, their openings are clear, and they are installed correctly in their designated spots on the lid.
- Look into the vent pipe (the metal tube where the regulator sits). Use a pipe cleaner or toothpick to gently clear any trapped food particles that could block steam from exiting to build pressure.
- Before cooking, always make sure the lid handle is aligned with the pot handle and you rotate it fully until it stops to achieve a proper mechanical seal.
If That Didn't Work
If a thorough cleaning and reseating of all parts doesn't resolve it, the sealing ring may be permanently degraded and need replacement—this is a consumable part. Also, check the underside of the lid and the rim of the pot for any deep scratches, dents, or warping that could prevent a tight seal. Ensure you are using enough liquid (at least 1 cup) to generate the necessary steam.
Heads Up
Never force the lid to lock. The cooker is designed not to lock without pressure as a critical safety feature. Operating a pressure cooker with a damaged or missing seal, or with blocked vents, is extremely dangerous.
