Diagnosis
The dull appearance on your Presto 01264 aluminum pressure cooker is normal and is caused by oxidation of the aluminum surface. This is a cosmetic issue and does not affect the cooker's safety or performance. The dullness can be accelerated by exposure to hard water minerals, food residues, and the natural heat cycles of cooking.
How to Fix It
For routine cleaning and to maintain shine, follow these steps:
- After each use and once the cooker is completely cool, wash the pot, lid, and all removable parts (sealing ring, over-pressure plug, vent pipe, and cover lock) with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth. Never use steel wool or abrasive cleaners.
- Dry all parts thoroughly with a towel to prevent water spots.
- To restore shine to the exterior, apply a small amount of a non-abrasive metal polish (like those made for aluminum or stainless steel) to a soft cloth. Gently buff the dull areas, then wipe clean with a separate damp cloth and dry. Do this only occasionally, as needed.
If That Didn't Work
For stubborn discoloration or mineral deposits:
- Create a paste from baking soda and water. Apply it with a soft cloth, rub gently, then rinse and dry.
- For interior stains, you can simmer a mixture of 1 cup water and 2 tablespoons white vinegar or lemon juice in the pot for 5-10 minutes. Let it cool, then wash normally.
- Always ensure the safety mechanisms—the vent pipe, over-pressure plug, and cover lock—are completely clear of any polish or cleaning paste residue before reassembly and use.
