it's making a loud gurgling or bubbling noise, almost like water is running through it, is that normal?

— asked by Jamie

DIAGNOSIS This is the sound of refrigerant moving through the system. It is normal during compressor startup and shutdown cycles.

FIX No fix is required for normal operation. The noise should subside within 1-2 minutes after the compressor stabilizes or shuts off.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If the gurgling is constant and accompanied by poor performance (little to no water collection), it may indicate low refrigerant or a restriction in the capillary tube. This requires service.

HEADS UP Distinguish this from a loud rattling or grinding noise, which indicates a loose part or failing fan motor. Gurgling is a fluid sound; mechanical noises are not normal.
