Diagnosis
The primary cause for a dry mop pad on a brand new Roborock S7 is an "air lock" within the internal pumping system. Because the S7 uses an electronic sonic mopping system that vibrates the pad, it relies on a precise vacuum seal to pull water from the tank through a narrow internal tube. When the unit is shipped, the tubing is empty; if the pump attempts to engage while an air bubble is trapped at the intake valve, it creates a pocket of air that prevents the pump from creating the necessary suction to draw water. You can confirm this is an air lock if the robot's app indicates that mopping is active and you can hear the sonic vibration (a high-frequency humming sound) when the robot is on a flat surface, yet the cloth remains bone dry after 10-15 minutes of operation. If the pump is working but the water isn't moving, the physical blockage is almost always gaseous rather than a mechanical failure of the pump motor itself.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must manually prime the water system to force the air bubble out of the internal line. Follow these exact steps:
- Remove the water tank from the S7 chassis. Fill the tank with clean water exactly to the "MAX" fill line. Do not overfill, as this can cause leakage into the electronics.
- Ensure the rubber gasket on the tank's output nozzle is seated correctly and not pinched.
- Before sliding the tank back in, hold the tank upside down over a sink. Gently squeeze the sides of the plastic tank several times. This creates positive pressure that pushes water into the delivery nozzle, clearing any initial air pockets.
- Reinsert the tank firmly until you hear a distinct click.
- Open the Roborock app, go to Settings > Mopping Settings, and set the "Water Level" to "High" (the maximum flow setting).
- Start a "Mop Only" cleaning cycle on a hard floor. Let the robot run for at least 5 to 10 minutes. It often takes several minutes for the pump to finally displace the remaining air and for the water to saturate the microfiber pad.
If That Didn't Work
- Pre-wet the Mopping Cloth: The S7's pump is designed to maintain moisture, not necessarily to saturate a bone-dry cloth from scratch. Thoroughly soak the microfiber mop pad in water and wring it out so it is damp but not dripping before attaching it to the bracket. This reduces the surface tension and allows the internal pump to "catch" the moisture more easily.
- Check the Tank Vent: There is a small air vent hole in the water tank to prevent a vacuum from forming. If this hole is clogged with debris or a manufacturing film, water won't flow. Use a thin needle or a toothpick to ensure the vent hole is completely clear.
- Verify the Water Tank Seal: Inspect the small rubber O-ring at the bottom of the tank where it connects to the robot. If the ring is twisted or missing, the pump will suck air from the gap instead of pulling water from the tank. If the ring is damaged, it must be replaced to restore the airtight seal.
- Perform a Hard Reset: In rare cases, the pump firmware may hang. Power the unit off completely using the physical power button, wait 30 seconds, and restart. Ensure the robot is on a flat surface; if it's tilted, the pump may struggle to prime.

- Avoid Third-Party Chemicals: Never use floor cleaners, soaps, or detergents inside the S7 water tank. These can create suds or chemical precipitates that clog the microscopic nozzles of the sonic mopping system, leading to permanent pump failure.
- Prevent Dry-Outs: To avoid future air locks, never let the water tank run completely empty during a cleaning cycle. Refill it as soon as the app notifies you that the water is low.
- Cloth Maintenance: Always wash the mop pad after every 2-3 uses. Dried minerals from hard water can build up in the fabric, making it hydrophobic and preventing the water from spreading across the floor.
- Storage Tip: If you plan to store the robot without mopping for more than two weeks, empty the water tank and let it air dry to prevent algae or mold growth inside the internal tubing.
