Diagnosis
The grinding noise in the Roborock S7 is typically caused by a mechanical obstruction within the sonic mopping module. The S7 uses a high-frequency vibration system that moves the mopping plate up and down rapidly. When a small, hard object—such as a pebble, a piece of dried grout, a plastic bead, or a shard of glass—gets lodged between the vibrating plate and the internal drive mechanism, it creates a friction point. Instead of a smooth oscillation, the motor forces the plate against the debris, resulting in a loud, metallic grinding or rattling sound. In some cases, the issue is caused by a failure of the internal dampening springs or a misalignment of the drive shaft. If the noise persists even when the mopping plate is removed, the problem is deeper within the chassis, likely a worn-out bearing or a stripped gear in the vibration motor. You can confirm the cause by removing the mop cloth and running the vacuum on a hard floor; if the noise stops when the cloth is off but returns when the cloth is attached, the cloth may be pulling the plate at an angle, causing it to rub against the plastic housing.
How to Fix It
To clear the obstruction and restore the silent vibration of your S7, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the Roborock S7 completely using the power button on the top of the unit.
- Remove the water tank and the mopping cloth. Ensure the area is dry to prevent water from dripping into the internal electronics.
- Locate the silver-colored vibrating mopping plate. On the left and right sides of the plate, you will find two small plastic locking tabs/levers. Push these levers inward toward the center of the robot simultaneously.
- While holding the levers, gently lift the vibrating plate straight up and out of the chassis. Do not pull at an angle, as this can bend the drive pins.
- Use a can of compressed air or a vacuum hose to thoroughly clean the cavity where the plate sits. Pay close attention to the two drive pins (the small metal protrusions) that connect the motor to the plate.
- Inspect the underside of the vibrating plate for any embedded debris or scratches. If you find a small stone or grit, use a toothpick or a needle to pick it out.
- Wipe the contact points with a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol to remove any buildup of dried cleaning solution, which can create "sticky" friction.
- Reinsert the plate by aligning the pins and pressing down firmly until the locking levers snap back into place.
- Reattach the water tank and mop cloth, then run a "Spot Clean" to verify the noise is gone.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Drive Pin Integrity: Inspect the two small metal pins on the chassis for signs of bending or wear. If a pin is bent, the plate will sit unevenly and grind against the plastic frame. If bent, you can carefully straighten them with a pair of needle-nose pliers, but be extremely gentle to avoid snapping the metal.
- Test Without the Plate: Remove the vibrating plate entirely and run the robot. If you still hear a grinding noise coming from the bottom of the unit, the vibration motor's internal bearings have failed. This requires a full replacement of the sonic mopping module assembly (Part #S7-Mop-Module).
- Inspect the Mop Cloth Material: If you are using third-party replacement cloths, they may be too thick or have a different texture that puts undue stress on the vibration motor. Try using an original Roborock cloth to see if the grinding stops.
- Calibrate the Chassis: Ensure the robot isn't physically warped. Place the S7 on a perfectly flat surface. If it wobbles, the chassis may be slightly bent, causing the mopping plate to rub against the frame.
Heads Up
- Avoid Abrasive Cleaners: Never use bleach or harsh chemical cleaners in the water tank, as these can corrode the metal drive pins of the mopping module, leading to premature grinding and failure.
- Dry Before Storage: Always remove the mopping plate and cloth if the robot will be idle for more than 24 hours; moisture trapped in the vibration cavity can lead to oxidation.
- Debris Check: If you have a home with gravel or coarse sand, perform a "plate check" once every two weeks to clear out grit before it damages the motor.
- Firmware Updates: Keep your firmware updated via the Roborock app, as some updates optimize the vibration frequency to reduce mechanical wear and tear.
