Diagnosis
The "Ink Absorber Full" error (often accompanied by error code 5B00 or 5B01) occurs because the Canon MegaTank G3270 tracks the volume of ink discarded during print head cleaning cycles and nozzle checks. Inside the chassis, there are physical felt pads designed to soak up this waste ink. To prevent ink from overflowing and leaking onto your desk or damaging the internal electronics, the printer uses a digital counter that triggers a hard lockout once a specific threshold of "drops" is reached. This is not a sensor that detects actual liquid levels, but rather a mathematical estimate based on the number of cleaning cycles performed. Even if the pads are technically dry, the software will disable all printing, scanning, and copying functions to force a maintenance event. You can confirm this is the issue if the printer screen displays the specific message "The ink absorber is full. Please contact your service representative" and refuses to enter the home menu.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a software reset of the Waste Ink Counter and, ideally, address the physical pads. Follow these precise steps:
- Connect the G3270 to a PC via a high-quality USB-A to USB-B cable. Wireless connections will not work for service resets.
- Enter "Service Mode" by turning the printer off. Hold down the Stop button, then hold the Power button. While holding Power, release the Stop button and press it twice, then release the Power button. The screen should now be blank or show a specific service state.
- Download and launch a Canon Service Tool (such as ST V5700 or higher). Ensure the software is run as an Administrator on Windows.
- In the "Main" tab, locate the "Clear Waste Ink Counter" section.
- Select the "Main" checkbox under the "Ink Absorber" column.
- Click the "Start" or "Set" button. The software should return a "Result: A-OK" message.
- Turn the printer off completely, unplug the power cord for 30 seconds, and restart it normally.
If That Didn't Work
- Manual Hardware Reset: If the software fails to connect, try the "Hard Reset" sequence: Power off, hold the Resume/Stop button for 5 seconds, release, press it 5 times rapidly, then press Power. This can sometimes force the printer into a state where the Service Tool can communicate.
- Physical Pad Replacement: Resetting the software ignores the fact that the pads are physically saturated. If you continue printing after a reset, ink may leak from the bottom of the printer. Purchase a replacement absorber kit (Part #G-Series Waste Pad) and replace the felt sponges located at the bottom of the unit.
- External Waste Tank Modification: For high-volume users, you can drill a small hole in the chassis where the waste tube exits and reroute the tube into an external bottle. This allows you to see the actual ink level and prevents the pads from ever filling up again.
- Firmware Downgrade: Some newer firmware updates block third-party service tools. If the tool says "Communication Error," you may need to flash an older version of the firmware via USB before the reset command will be accepted.
Heads Up
- Avoid Over-Cleaning: Excessive use of the "Deep Cleaning" function fills the absorber significantly faster than standard printing. Only use Deep Cleaning if you have visible banding or missing colors.
- Ink Leakage Risk: If you reset the counter without replacing the physical pads, place the printer on a plastic tray or absorbent towel to protect your furniture from potential leaks.
- USB Cable Quality: Use a shielded USB cable shorter than 6 feet. Long or low-quality cables often cause the Service Tool to time out during the reset process.
- Power Stability: Never unplug the printer while the Service Tool is executing a "Set" command, as this can corrupt the EEPROM chip and permanently brick the mainboard.
