The washed-out colors and "weird" hues on your Canon MegaTank G3270 are typically caused by partial nozzle obstructions or air bubbles trapped within the ink delivery tubes. Because the G3270 uses a continuous ink system, the ink must travel from the external tanks through a series of tubes to the printheads. If the printer sits idle for more than two weeks, the ink at the microscopic nozzle openings evaporates and crystallizes, creating a physical plug that prevents ink from flowing evenly. When only specific colors are blocked (e.g., magenta is missing but cyan is flowing), the printer attempts to compensate by mixing other colors, leading to an unnatural, washed-out, or greenish/purplish tint. You can confirm this by performing a Nozzle Check. If the grid pattern shows streaks, white gaps, or missing color blocks, you have a hardware blockage rather than a software setting issue. Furthermore, check the transparent ink tubes leading to the printheads; if you see large air gaps or "bubbles" in the lines, the printhead is starving for ink regardless of how full the tanks are.
How to Fix It
To restore color vibrancy and clear the blockages, follow this precise sequence to purge the system and clear the nozzles:
- Press the Setup (wrench icon) button on the printer's control panel.
- Use the arrow buttons to navigate to Maintenance and press OK.
- Select Cleaning and press OK. Run this once and print a test page. If colors are still faded, proceed to the next step.
- Navigate back to Maintenance and select Deep Cleaning. Select All Colors to ensure the entire system is flushed. Press OK. This process takes significantly more ink and time than a standard cleaning; do not power off the machine during this cycle.
- Once the Deep Cleaning is complete, print a Nozzle Check pattern. If the colors are still not 100% saturated, wait 24 hours for the ink to soak into the dried residue and then repeat the Deep Cleaning process one final time.
- If you see air gaps in the tubes, navigate to Maintenance > Ink Flush. Warning: This is a heavy-duty operation that consumes a large amount of ink and fills the waste ink absorber quickly. Only use this if Deep Cleaning fails and air bubbles are visible in the lines.
If That Didn't Work
- Verify Paper Settings: Ensure your print settings match the actual paper in the tray. If you are using "Plain Paper" settings but printing on "Photo Paper," the printer will not dispense enough ink, resulting in a washed-out look. Go to the print driver on your PC/Mac, select Media Type, and change it to Photo Paper Plus Glossy II for high-saturation prints.
- Manual Printhead Cleaning: If the ink flush fails, the printhead (specifically the BH-7 or CH-7 cartridges) may be physically fouled. Remove the printhead from the carriage and gently dab the bottom nozzle plate onto a damp, lint-free paper towel. If you don't see three distinct, solid stripes of color (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow), the printhead may need professional replacement.
- Disable 'Draft' Mode: Check your print quality settings. If the printer is set to Draft or Fast mode, it intentionally reduces ink deposition to save time and ink, which creates a faded appearance. Change the quality setting to High or Standard.
- Check Ink Valve: Ensure the ink valve (if applicable to your specific regional G3270 variant) is set to the "Printing" position and not "Transport" mode, as this restricts flow to the heads.

- Print Weekly: To prevent future clogs, print at least one full-color page every 7-10 days. This keeps the ink moving and prevents the nozzles from drying out.
