The streaky smudges on your Canon MegaTank G3270 scanner glass are typically caused by "residue redistribution." This happens when you use household glass cleaners containing ammonia or soaps that leave a microscopic chemical film on the surface. Because the G3270 uses a CIS (Contact Image Sensor) that moves across the glass, any residue—even a thin layer of oil from a finger or a dried soap streak—creates a refractive distortion that appears as a line or smudge on your digital scan. Furthermore, standard microfiber cloths often trap particulates. If the cloth isn't professionally laundered or is used for other surfaces, it simply smears oils across the glass rather than lifting them. You can confirm this is a residue issue if the streaks appear in the same linear direction every time you wipe, or if you see "rainbowing" effects when viewing the glass under a bright desk lamp at a shallow angle.
How to Fix It
To achieve a laboratory-grade clean on the G3270 platen, follow this professional decontamination sequence:
- Power down the printer and disconnect the power cable from the wall to ensure the scan head does not move while you are working.
- Prepare a solution of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol mixed with distilled water in a 1:1 ratio. Do not use Windex or any cleaner containing ammonia, as these can degrade the anti-reflective coating on the glass over time.
- Apply the solution to a high-density, lint-free optical cloth (the kind used for camera lenses). Never spray any liquid directly onto the scanner glass; the G3270's chassis has small gaps where liquid can seep into the internal electronics and cause a short circuit.
- Wipe the glass using a "S-pattern" motion. Start at the top left corner, move horizontally to the right, then drop down slightly and move back to the left. This ensures you are pushing contaminants off the edge of the glass rather than rubbing them back into the center.
- Immediately follow the damp wipe with a completely dry, clean microfiber cloth. Buff the glass in small circular motions until all moisture has evaporated.
- Inspect the glass by shining a flashlight from the side to ensure no haze remains before plugging the unit back in.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Calibration Strip: If the streaks only appear on the scanned image but the glass looks clean, the issue may be the white calibration strip (the thin white plastic bar located just under the edge of the glass). Use a dry cotton swab to gently wipe any dust or ink splatter off this strip.
- Remove Adhesive Residue: If you have used tape or labels on your documents, there may be invisible adhesive patches. Apply a tiny amount of Goo Gone or a similar citrus-based solvent to a cotton ball, rub the spot gently, and then immediately clean the area with isopropyl alcohol to remove the solvent's oily residue.
- Address Static Build-up: If dust returns instantly after cleaning, the glass may have a static charge. Use an anti-static treatment or a specialized electronics duster to neutralize the surface before performing the final wipe.
- Inspect the ADF Glass: If you are using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and seeing streaks, the problem isn't the main flatbed glass. Clean the narrow strip of glass to the left of the main platen using the same isopropyl alcohol method, as this is where most "line" streaks originate.
Heads Up
- Avoid using paper towels or napkins; these are made of wood pulp and create microscopic scratches (swirl marks) on the glass over time, which will eventually cause permanent blurriness in your scans.
- Never use acetone or nail polish remover, as these will permanently dissolve the glass coating and cloud the surface.
- Keep the scanner lid closed when not in use to prevent airborne dust and pet hair from settling on the platen.
- If you notice a persistent line that doesn't move regardless of cleaning, the CIS sensor may be failing or have an internal hardware obstruction that requires professional service.
