This issue occurs because the ecobee SmartThermostat Premium is receiving a "state change" signal from a paired SmartSensor (specifically the door/window contact sensors) indicating that a magnetic contact has been broken. When the "Pause when Open" feature is active within the eco+ suite, the thermostat interprets this signal as an open window and immediately kills the HVAC call for cooling to prevent energy waste, resulting in the "Paused" status on your main display. The root cause is typically a physical misalignment of the sensor and its magnet, or a software glitch where the sensor is reporting an "Open" state despite being physically closed. You can confirm which specific sensor is the culprit by navigating to the Main Menu > Sensors. The sensor triggering the pause will show a status of "Open" or "Open/Closed" in the sensor list, even if the window is shut tight. If the sensor shows "Closed" but the AC is still pausing, the issue may be a delayed signal or a conflict with a third-party integration like HomeKit or Alexa.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must first identify the malfunctioning sensor and then either calibrate the hardware or disable the software trigger. Follow these exact steps:
- Wake the ecobee SmartThermostat Premium by tapping the screen.
- Tap the Main Menu (three horizontal lines) in the bottom left corner.
- Select eco+ from the menu options.
- Scroll down to find the Pause when Open setting.
- Tap into this menu to see the list of all paired SmartSensors. You will see a list of checkboxes next to each room/sensor.
- Identify the sensor that is incorrectly reporting as "Open." Uncheck the box next to that specific sensor. This removes it from the "Pause" logic while still allowing it to be used for occupancy or temperature sensing.
- If you want to disable the feature entirely for all windows, toggle the master switch for Pause when Open to Off.
- Return to the home screen and wait 30 seconds; the "Paused" message should disappear, and the AC should resume its normal cooling cycle.
If That Didn't Work
- Check Magnet Alignment: Inspect the physical installation of the sensor and the magnet. The gap between the sensor body and the magnet must be less than 0.5 inches (12.7mm). If the window has shifted or the adhesive is peeling, the sensor will intermittently report as "Open," triggering the pause. Re-center the magnet and ensure it is flush against the frame.
- Perform a Hard Sensor Reset: Remove the battery from the problematic SmartSensor for 60 seconds, then re-insert it. This forces the sensor to re-sync its current state with the thermostat. Once re-inserted, open and close the window three times to ensure the state is updating correctly in the ecobee app.
- Check for Signal Interference: If the sensor is located behind heavy metal frames or thick masonry, it may send a "stale" signal that the thermostat interprets as an open state. Try moving the sensor slightly or installing an ecobee SmartSensor in a more central location to act as a signal bridge.
- Update Firmware: Ensure your thermostat is connected to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and check for updates. A known bug in earlier firmware versions caused "ghost" triggers for contact sensors. A system reboot (Main Menu > Device Settings > Reboot) often clears the cache and resolves these false positives.

- Battery Drain: Sensors that are constantly toggling between "Open" and "Closed" due to poor alignment will drain their batteries significantly faster than normal. Replace them with high-quality lithium batteries if you notice frequent disconnects.
- Eco+ Conflicts: Be aware that "Pause when Open" can conflict with "Smart Recovery" settings. If the system is paused, it will not pre-cool your home for your scheduled wake-up time.
- Symmetry: Always ensure the magnet is placed on the moving part of the window and the sensor is on the stationary frame to prevent the sensor from being knocked loose during operation.
