my honda generator is making a weird sputtering noise and the power flickers when i plug in my fridge. is the eco throttle thing broken?

— asked by Jenna

No, it's likely working as designed. The Eco Throttle system reduces engine speed under light load, and a large appliance startup can cause a brief voltage drop.

Fix: For high electrical loads that start simultaneously (like a refrigerator compressor), turn the Eco Throttle switch to the OFF position. This locks the engine at a constant higher speed, providing more stable voltage during startup.

If That Didn't Work: Check for an overload. The EU2200i's 30A twist-lock receptacle can only provide its full 1.8 kVA output if another EU2200i or Companion is connected in parallel. Otherwise, limit loads to the standard 20A receptacles' capacity.

Heads Up: For general, lower-load use, keep Eco Throttle ON to minimize fuel consumption and noise. Switch it OFF only when you need maximum startup power stability.
