my honda generator's oil alert light came on and it died. i just added oil yesterday, is it broken?

— asked by Jenna

Yeah, this one's common. The Oil Alert system is super sensitive and will kill the engine before oil gets critically low. If it stopped or the red light is on when you pull the starter, the oil level is still the first thing to check.

Park it on a level surface. Check the dipstick. Even if you added oil yesterday, it might not have been enough to reach the full mark. Top it up to the proper level.

If that didn't work, and the oil level is definitely correct, there might be an issue with the Oil Alert sensor itself. That's a dealer fix.

Heads up: Always check the oil level before each use as part of your pre-op check. A low level is the most common reason for a no-start or shutdown.
