my honda generator shuts off after running for a while, feels really hot. can i run it in my garage if i open the door?

— asked by Kevin

No. Never run it in a garage, even with the door open. Overheating and carbon monoxide poisoning are the immediate issues.

First, move the generator outside, far from doors and windows. The exhaust contains carbon monoxide that can kill you in minutes.

For the overheating:

  • Ensure it's on a level surface with at least 3 feet (1 meter) of clearance on all sides and above.
  • Check all cooling holes on the side panel, control panel, and bottom. Clear any debris, mud, or obstructions.
  • Is the Eco Throttle switch ON? For very high or simultaneous loads, turn it OFF to reduce strain.

If that didn't work, the overheating may have caused internal damage to the engine or inverter. Let it cool completely. If it continues to overheat and shut down, service is required.
