Smears are typically caused by accumulated toner or dust inside the fuser assembly. Run the internal cleaning cycle.
- Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS) from a web browser. The IP address is on a network report, or use the HP Smart app to access it.
- Navigate to the System tab, then click Service.
- In the Fuser Cleaning mode area, click Start. The printer will print a cleaning page.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: The toner cartridge itself may be contaminated. Access the EWS again, go to System > Service, and in the Cartridge Cleaning Mode area, click Start. This cleans the cartridge electrically.
HEADS UP: Always use paper designed for laser printers that is free of cuts, tears, dust, and metallic material like glitter. Poor paper quality causes these issues.
