DIAGNOSIS The paper pickup rollers are worn smooth or contaminated with dust, losing their grip. The whirring is the motor spinning the rollers without moving paper.
FIX Power off and unplug the printer. Remove all paper from the tray. Locate the white rubber pickup rollers inside the printer at the bottom of the paper feed area. Clean them with a lint-free cloth dampened with water. While cleaning, rotate the rollers to clean their entire surface. Let them dry completely. Reassemble the tray and load paper firmly against the rear guide, ensuring the stack is below the maximum fill line.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The separation pad, a small piece of rubber or felt that helps feed one sheet at a time, may be worn. This pad is located opposite the pickup rollers. It is not user-serviceable on most models. You can try lightly rubbing its surface with a clean pencil eraser to restore slight texture.
HEADS UP Using paper that is too glossy, too heavy, or has a damaged edge will accelerate roller wear. For consistent feeding, use standard 20-24 lb bond paper and fan the stack before loading. Worn rollers are a consumable part and may eventually require replacement by a technician.
