If you press the Program button and the display remains static or fails to enter the flashing hour/minute mode, it is almost always because the machine has entered a "Clock Not Set" state. This typically occurs after a power surge, a brief outage, or if the unit was unplugged for cleaning. The machine cannot calculate a countdown to a future brew time without a baseline current time. Unlike some appliances that default to 12:00, the CM401 often requires a manual "wake up" of the clock settings before the programmable brew logic becomes accessible. You can confirm this is the issue if the display shows a blinking "12:00" or if the "Program" button simply fails to trigger the blinking digit sequence required to set a brew time.
How to Fix It
To unlock the programming functionality, you must first establish the current time. Follow these exact steps:
- Ensure the machine is plugged into a grounded 120V outlet and powered on.
- Locate the PROGRAM button on the control panel. Press and hold this button firmly for exactly 3 to 5 seconds. You will know it has engaged when the hour digit on the LED display begins to flash.
- Use the HOUR button to adjust the hour. Pay close attention to the AM/PM indicator on the display; if you are brewing for 6:00 AM, ensure the "AM" light is illuminated.
- Press the MINUTE button to adjust the minutes to the current time.
- Press the PROGRAM button one final time to lock in the current time. The display should now stop flashing and show the steady current time.
- Now that the clock is set, press the PROGRAM button briefly. The display will now enter "Set Brew Time" mode, allowing you to select the time you want the coffee to start automatically.
- Once the desired brew time is set, press the PROGRAM button again. The "Auto" indicator light will illuminate, confirming the timer is now active.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Power Cycle: Unplug the CM401 from the wall outlet for a full 60 seconds. This drains the capacitors on the main control board and clears any "ghost" logic errors that may be preventing the Program button from registering. Plug it back in and immediately attempt the clock-set sequence again.
- Check for Button Obstructions: The membrane switches on the CM401 can sometimes become sticky if coffee residue or sugar has seeped behind the plastic bezel. Gently wipe the area around the Program, Hour, and Minute buttons with a damp microfiber cloth and a drop of isopropyl alcohol to ensure the buttons are depressing fully and clicking.
