The "burnt" taste occurs because the coffee in direct contact with the bottom of the glass carafe is subjected to temperatures far exceeding the ideal drinking temperature (typically 155°F to 175°F). This causes localized overheating, which triggers a chemical breakdown of the coffee oils and solids—essentially "cooking" the coffee. You can confirm this by noticing a dark, concentrated ring of residue clinging to the bottom interior of the carafe after a brew cycle, or by observing that the coffee tastes significantly more bitter at the bottom of the pot than at the top.
How to Fix It
To prevent the scorching of your brew while still utilizing the machine's functionality, follow these precise operational steps:
- Immediate Decanting: As soon as the brew cycle completes and the final drops fall into the carafe, remove the vessel from the warming plate. Do not allow the coffee to sit on the plate for more than 15 minutes.
- Thermal Transfer: Transfer the brewed coffee into a pre-heated double-walled vacuum-insulated thermal carafe. To pre-heat the thermal carafe, fill it with boiling water for 2 minutes, dump the water, and then pour in your coffee. This maintains the temperature via insulation rather than active heating.
