This is not safe. Steam hissing from around the lid seal, rather than the designated pressure release valve, indicates a critical failure of the primary sealing system. This means the pressure discharging device cannot function correctly, as the cooker cannot achieve or maintain a proper seal to build pressure safely. The gasket (sealing ring) may be damaged, misaligned, dirty, or the lid may not be locked correctly. This is a safety safeguard alerting you to a malfunction.
How to Fix It
Immediately unplug the unit and carefully move the pressure release valve to the "Venting" position to depressurize safely. Do not attempt to force the lid open. Once fully depressurized and cool, inspect and address the issue:
- Check the Lid Lock: Ensure the lid is properly aligned and rotated to the fully locked position, indicated by an audible click or alignment mark.
- Inspect the Gasket: Remove the silicone sealing ring. Check for cuts, warping, brittleness, or food debris. Clean it thoroughly and re-seat it properly in its groove.
- Clean the Lid Rim: Wipe the rim of the cooker pot and the underside of the lid where the gasket seals to remove any residue.
If That Didn't Work
If steam still escapes during a water test, the sealing gasket is likely permanently damaged and needs replacement. Order a manufacturer-approved replacement part for your specific 12-quart model. If a new, properly installed gasket does not solve the problem, there may be damage to the lid or pot rim itself. In this case, discontinue use and contact the manufacturer for repair or replacement, as the integrity of the pressure chamber is compromised.
