Diagnosis
The "cleaning pad not detected" error on the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ occurs when the robot's internal logic board fails to receive a confirmation signal from the mop pad assembly. This is not a mechanical failure of the pad itself, but a failure of the electrical circuit. The j9+ uses a series of small, gold-plated spring-loaded pogo pins located on the chassis that must make a perfect electrical connection with the metallic contact points on the mop pad's plastic mounting bracket.
This failure typically happens due to "micro-corrosion" or a thin film of dried detergent and minerals from tap water. Even if the pad looks clean to the naked eye, a microscopic layer of residue can act as an insulator, blocking the low-voltage signal the robot uses to verify the pad is installed. In some cases, the spring tension in one of the pogo pins has weakened, or the pad is not seated fully into the locking mechanism, leaving a gap of just a few millimeters that breaks the circuit.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to restore the electrical connection and clear the error code:
- Press and hold the Home button for 10 seconds to completely power down the robot. Ensure the light ring is entirely off.
- Carefully remove the mop pad and the plastic mounting bracket from the underside of the chassis.
- Locate the three small, circular gold contact pins on the robot's underbelly. Use a cotton swab dipped in 70% or 91% isopropyl alcohol to scrub each pin individually. Apply firm but gentle pressure to ensure any oxidation is removed.
- Inspect the corresponding contact plates on the plastic mop pad mount. If you see any white, chalky residue (calcium buildup), scrub these plates with the alcohol-dipped swab until they are shiny.
- Dry the contacts with a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth. Do not use paper towels, as they can leave behind fibers that interfere with the connection.
- Reinsert the mop pad mount. Listen for a distinct "click" sound, which confirms the locking tabs have engaged and the pins are compressed against the contacts.
- Power the robot back on and run a "Mop Only" cycle to verify the error has cleared.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Pin Recess: Use a flashlight to examine the three pogo pins on the robot. Gently press each one with a plastic toothpick. They should spring back instantly. If one pin remains recessed or feels "stuck," it cannot make contact with the pad. Use a can of compressed air to blow out any debris lodged inside the pin housing.
- Test with a Spare Pad: If you have a secondary mop pad, swap it in. The metallic contact plates on the plastic mount can occasionally warp or become scratched, preventing a flush connection. If a new pad resolves the issue, the old mount's contact plates are likely worn down.
- Hard Reset the Logic Board: Sometimes the error persists in the cache. With the robot on, press and hold the Clean button for 20 seconds. The robot will reboot. This forces the system to re-poll the hardware sensors, including the pad detection circuit.
- Inspect for Water Ingress: Check the area around the contacts for any signs of leaking water from the internal tank. If water has seeped into the pin housing, it can cause a short circuit. Use a vacuum cleaner on a high setting to suck out any moisture from the contact area before attempting to power on again.

- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use bleach or abrasive scouring pads on the gold contact pins; this will strip the plating and lead to permanent connectivity failure.
- Distilled Water Only: To prevent the mineral buildup that causes this error, use distilled water in the tank rather than tap water.
- Dry Before Storage: Never leave a damp mop pad attached to the robot while it is docked for long periods. This promotes corrosion on the contact pins.
- Firm Seating: Always double-check that the pad is pushed all the way in. A "loose" fit is the number one cause of intermittent "not detected" warnings during a cleaning cycle.
