The "Robot Unable to Return to Charge" error on the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ typically stems from a failure in the infrared (IR) handshake between the robot's front-facing sensors and the Clean Base's beacon. Unlike older models, the j9+ relies on a sophisticated combination of VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) and IR signals. If the robot loses its spatial orientation or the IR signal is attenuated, it will wander aimlessly until the battery reaches a critical threshold, causing it to shut down mid-floor. How to Fix It
To resolve the docking failure and ensure the j9+ returns to the Clean Base consistently, follow these precise steps:
- Clear the "Docking Zone": Ensure there is a minimum of 1.5 feet (18 inches) of completely open space on both the left and right sides of the Clean Base and 5 feet of clear space directly in front of it. Remove any rugs, doorstops, or furniture that might cause the robot to approach the base at a slight angle.
- Clean the IR Beacon: Locate the two circular infrared windows on the front of the Clean Base. Using a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth, wipe these windows clean. Avoid using glass cleaners or chemical solvents, as these can leave a film that refracts the IR signal.

- Inspect the Front Bumper: Gently press the front bumper to ensure it moves freely and snaps back. If the bumper is stuck or jammed with debris, the robot may believe it is constantly colliding with an object, preventing it from completing the final approach to the dock.
