my vacuum makes a high-pitched whistling or screeching noise from the cleaner head.

DIAGNOSIS Something is caught in the brush bar, or the bearing in the cleaner head is failing. Hair and string are the most common culprits.

FIX Turn the cleaner head over and slide the red clips to release the soleplate. Cut away any hair, thread, or debris wrapped tightly around the ends of the brush bar and remove any obstructions.

IF THAT DIDN’T WORK The brush bar itself might be unbalanced or damaged. Remove it completely by unscrewing the end cap (a coin usually works) and inspect it for breaks or excessive wear.

HEADS UP Never run the motorized head with the soleplate removed—it can throw debris and damage the mechanism.
