You have not broken your blender; you have triggered the thermal overload protection system. Nut butters are high-viscosity, high-friction foods. When you blend thick nut pastes, the motor must work significantly harder to rotate the blades, generating intense internal heat. The Vitamix E310 is equipped with a thermal cut-out switch designed to kill power to the motor instantly when it reaches a critical temperature threshold to prevent the copper windings from melting or the motor from burning out.
This typically happens when the mixture is too thick to circulate effectively or when the blender is run for several minutes without a break. You can confirm this is the issue if the machine shut off abruptly without a power surge in your home and will not turn back on immediately, even after flipping the power switch off and on. The motor is essentially "locking" itself out until the internal sensors detect a safe operating temperature.
How to Fix It
To reset your E310 and safely complete your nut butter, follow these precise steps:
- Immediately turn the machine off and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to ensure no residual current is flowing to the motor.
- Remove the container from the motor base. This allows air to circulate around the motor housing more efficiently, speeding up the cooling process.
- Wait exactly 30 to 45 minutes. Do not attempt to "test" the power every few minutes, as this can interfere with the cooling cycle.
- While waiting, check your ingredients. If the nut butter is extremely dry, add 1-2 tablespoons of a neutral oil (like peanut or coconut oil) or a small amount of water to reduce the viscosity.
- Plug the machine back in and place the container on the base.
- Set the variable speed dial to 1 and turn the switch on. Slowly increase the speed to setting 6 or 10.
- Process the nut butter in short bursts. Once the mixture begins to "vortex" or circulate, blend for no more than 60 seconds at a time.
- If the motor sounds like it is straining (a deeper, slower hum), stop immediately and let it rest for 2 minutes.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the GFCI Outlet: If the blender doesn't power on after 45 minutes, check the outlet. Blenders drawing high current can occasionally trip the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) reset button on your kitchen wall outlet. Press the "Reset" button on the outlet itself.

- Verify Power Strip Usage: If you are using a surge protector or power strip, bypass it and plug the E310 directly into a wall outlet. Nut butter blending draws maximum amperage, and cheap power strips can overheat and cut power to the device.
- Test with Water: To rule out a permanent motor failure, fill the container with warm water and run it on speed 5. If it runs perfectly with water but trips with nuts, your ingredients are simply too thick for the current motor temperature.

- Avoid Low Speeds: Never blend thick nut butters on speeds 1-3. Low speeds provide less torque and cause the motor to work harder and heat up faster. Always ramp up to at least speed 6 for thick pastes.
- The "Vortex" Rule: Only process thick mixtures once they have reached the "vortex" stage (where the food pulls down into the blades). Forcing the motor to spin while the food is just sitting on top of the blades causes rapid overheating.
- Temperature Management: If you are making large batches, roast your nuts and let them cool slightly before blending. Adding boiling hot nuts to a thick paste increases the thermal load on the motor.
- Container Fill Level: Do not overfill the container beyond the max fill line when making nut butters. The motor needs the food to move freely; a packed container creates too much resistance.
