my whirlpool washer just says F21 and won't drain at all, what does that mean?

DIAGNOSIS That's a drain error. Your washer is trying to pump the water out but it's not working, usually because the drain hose or pump is clogged, or the pump itself has failed.

FIX First, check for a simple blockage. 1) Unplug the washer. 2) Pull it away from the wall and disconnect the drain hose from the standpipe or sink drain. 3) Check the end of the hose and the drain pipe for any gunk or a kink. 4) Also, look inside the drain pump filter (it's a small round cover on the lower front-left corner of the washer). Put a towel down, twist it open slowly to let any water drain into a shallow pan, and pull out any coins, hair, or debris you find inside.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If the hose and filter are clear, the drain pump motor itself might be dead. You can listen for it—start a drain/spin cycle and put your ear to the front lower panel. If you don't hear a humming or whirring, the pump isn't getting power or has burned out and needs replacement.

HEADS UP When you check the filter, water will come out—have that towel and pan ready. And always, always unplug the machine before you stick your hands near any internal parts.
