The flickering or intermittent black screens (often called "blackouts") on the BenQ EW3270U are typically caused by HDMI bandwidth instability. Because 4K resolution at 60Hz with HDR requires significant data throughput, any signal degradation in the cable or port can cause the handshake between the source and monitor to fail momentarily, resulting in a signal drop.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to stabilize the signal:
- Upgrade the Cable: Replace your current cable with a certified "Premium High Speed" (HDMI 2.0) or "Ultra High Speed" (HDMI 2.1) cable. Many generic cables cannot maintain the 18Gbps required for 4K HDR.
- Verify Port Selection: Ensure you are using the HDMI 2.0 port on the monitor. Check the labels on the back to ensure you aren't using a legacy port that supports lower bandwidth.
- Adjust Source Settings: On your PC or console, ensure the output is set specifically to 4K 60Hz. If you are using a PC, check your GPU control panel (NVIDIA/AMD) and ensure the color depth is set to 8-bit or 10-bit rather than 12-bit, which can overload some cables.
If That Didn't Work
If hardware upgrades don't stop the flicker, the issue may be software-based or related to BenQ's image processing:
- Disable Brightness Stabilizer: Navigate to the OSD Menu > Picture > Brightness Stabilizer and turn it OFF. This feature can sometimes cause flickering in high-contrast HDR scenes.
- Update Firmware/Drivers: Ensure your GPU drivers are up to date. If using a laptop, ensure the integrated graphics driver is updated, as it often handles the display output.
- Test a Different Source: Plug in a different 4K device to determine if the issue is with the monitor's internal board or the original source device.

For the most stable experience on Windows PCs, use a DisplayPort 1.2 (or higher) cable instead of HDMI. DisplayPort generally handles 4K 60Hz HDR signals with greater stability and less susceptibility to the "blacking out" effect common with HDMI handshaking issues.
