When the Bissell CrossWave 1785A stops spraying solution, the issue is almost always a failure in the fluid delivery path between the clean water tank and the spray nozzle. This is typically caused by "mineral crystallization," where hard water and cleaning solution residue create a calcified plug inside the internal tubing or at the narrow orifice of the spray nozzle. Because the pump is a positive displacement system, it will continue to hum and the brush will spin, but the water cannot overcome the physical blockage, resulting in a "dry spin." Another common cause is a failure of the intake valve seal. If the tank is not seated perfectly or if the O-ring on the tank base has perished or shifted, the pump will suck air instead of solution—a phenomenon known as "air-locking." You can confirm this by listening to the pump; a healthy pump has a deep, consistent hum, while a pump sucking air often sounds higher-pitched or "scratchy." If you see bubbles in the clean tank while the machine is running, you have an air leak in the seal.
How to Fix It
To resolve a blockage or prime the pump, follow these precise steps:
- Clear the Air Lock: Remove the clean water tank. Inspect the rubber gasket at the bottom of the tank for any debris or hair. Re-seat the tank firmly, pressing down until you hear a distinct click to ensure the intake valve is fully engaged.
- The Vinegar Flush: Empty the tank and fill it with 16oz (2 cups) of distilled white vinegar and 16oz of warm water. Do not add any soap.
- Manual Priming: Place the machine over a sink or a shallow tray of water to avoid flooding your floor. Power the unit on.
- Trigger Cycle: Press and hold the spray trigger for 30 seconds. If nothing comes out, release the trigger for two seconds and press it again. Repeat this "pulsing" motion five times to force the air bubble out of the internal line.
- Nozzle Clearing: While the machine is off, take a thin sewing needle or a piece of fine jewelry wire. Gently insert it into the spray nozzle hole located just in front of the brush roll to physically break any calcium crust.
- Full Cycle: Once the spray begins, run the vinegar solution for 3-5 minutes on a small patch of tile to ensure the internal lines are fully descaled.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Clean the Intake Valve: Remove the clean tank and look at the valve at the bottom. If there is a buildup of slime or grime, use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the valve seat. A tiny piece of debris here can prevent the pump from drawing water.
- Check the Spray Trigger Switch: If the pump isn't making any noise at all when you pull the trigger, the internal micro-switch may be faulty. Try pressing the trigger firmly and slightly to the side to see if the pump engages.
- Force-Prime the Pump: If the pump is air-locked and won't prime, remove the tank and carefully use a turkey baster or a small funnel to pour warm water directly into the intake port on the machine body. This fills the pump chamber manually, removing the air gap.
- Inspect the Brush Roll Housing: Remove the brush roll and check the plastic housing for any large clumps of hair or debris that might be physically blocking the spray path from the nozzle to the floor.

- Avoid Thick Detergents: Never use high-sudsing dish soap or thick floor cleaners. These create air bubbles (foam) in the line that lead to pump failure and clogging. Use only the official Bissell CrossWave formula or a very diluted mixture of water and white vinegar.
- Empty After Every Use: Leaving water in the clean tank for days allows mineral deposits to settle and harden inside the pump. Always empty the tank and let it air dry when not in use.
- Use Distilled Water: If you live in an area with hard water, switching to distilled water in the clean tank will permanently prevent the spray nozzle from clogging.
- Monthly Descaling: Run a dedicated vinegar-only cycle once a month, even if the machine is working perfectly, to prevent calcium buildup from narrowing the fluid lines.
