Diagnosis
The coupler (the plastic drive socket on the motor base) has sheared off because a lateral force was applied to the blender jar while the blade assembly was engaged and spinning. This most commonly happens when someone attempts to remove the jar or forcefully pushes down on the lid while the blender is running. The rotational lock between the jar's blade assembly and the base's coupler is not designed to withstand sideways pressure during operation.
How to Fix It
To prevent future failure, you must adopt a strict safety protocol before touching the jar.
- Always press the "Stop" button and wait for the blender to come to a complete, silent stop. Do not rely on the sound alone; ensure the blade is visibly stationary.
- Unplug the blender from the wall outlet. This is a critical step to prevent any accidental activation.
- Only after completing steps 1 and 2 should you twist and remove the blender jar or its lid. Never apply force to dislodge a stuck jar while the unit is powered.
If That Didn't Work
If the coupler fails again despite proper technique, the issue may be a pre-existing weakness from the initial failure or an alignment problem. First, ensure you are not overfilling the jar, as an excessively thick mixture can stall the motor and strain the coupler. If the problem recurs, the motor base itself may have sustained damage; contact KitchenAid customer support for service or a potential base replacement. Do not attempt to run the blender with a damaged coupler, as it can cause further internal damage.
Heads Up
Always lift and carry the blender by its base, not by the jar or jar handle. Carrying it by the jar can stress the coupler and blade assembly connection even when the blender is off, potentially leading to premature wear or misalignment.
