In more severe cases, the issue is structural. The plastic hook on the door is subject to high heat and repetitive stress; a hairline fracture at the base of the hook can cause it to flex outward when pushed, preventing it from locking. Additionally, if the unit is not perfectly level on your countertop, the chassis can subtly warp, shifting the alignment of the metal catch by just a few millimeters, which is enough to cause the latch to reject the hook and pop open.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must clear the mechanical obstruction and verify the alignment of the locking components. Follow these steps precisely:
- Unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely.
- Open the door fully and locate the white plastic hook on the top edge of the door. Use a flashlight to inspect the hook for any vertical cracks or "whitening" of the plastic, which indicates a stress fracture.
- Locate the metal latch catch embedded in the main chassis of the oven. Use a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol to scrub the interior of the catch. Specifically, target the area where the spring resides; remove any blackened grease or food debris that may be impeding the spring's travel.
