Diagnosis
The "EMPTY ME!" indicator on the Breville Barista Express (BES870XL) is a purely mechanical system; it does not use electronic sensors to detect water levels. The indicator consists of a buoyant plastic float housed within a vertical chamber. As the drip tray fills with water, the float rises, eventually pushing the red plastic tab upward through a slot in the tray to alert you that it is time to empty the reservoir. When the indicator stays in the "up" position despite the tray being empty, it is almost always due to "sludge buildup." Fine espresso grounds and oils migrate into the float chamber, creating a viscous paste that acts like glue. This residue creates enough friction to trap the float at the top of its travel, or it creates a vacuum effect that prevents the float from dropping back down. In some cases, a stray coffee bean or a large clump of compressed grounds can physically wedge the float in place, triggering a false positive.
How to Fix It
To reset the indicator and clear the debris, follow these precise steps to fully disassemble the tray assembly:
- Slide the drip tray completely out of the machine.
- Lift the stainless steel drip grid straight up and set it aside.
- Lift out the plastic coffee grind separator (the perforated tray that keeps grounds separate from the water).
- Locate the red "EMPTY ME!" indicator tab. To remove the float mechanism, reach into the tray and grip the edges of the float housing. Pull firmly upward to release the side latches that lock the float assembly into the base of the tray.
- Submerge the float assembly in a bowl of hot water mixed with a small amount of mild dish soap. Gently shake the assembly to ensure the float moves freely up and down within its chamber.
- Use a soft-bristled brush or a toothpick to clear any compacted coffee oils or grounds from the guide rails of the float housing.
- Rinse the drip tray base thoroughly, ensuring no debris remains in the corners where the float sits.
- Reinsert the float assembly by pushing it down until you hear a click, confirming the side latches have engaged.
- Replace the grind separator and the stainless steel grid.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Descaling of the Tray: If the float is still sluggish, soak the entire float assembly in a solution of warm water and white vinegar (a 1:1 ratio) for 30 minutes. This breaks down the calcified coffee oils and mineral deposits that soap cannot reach.
- Check for Warping: Inspect the plastic housing of the drip tray for any signs of warping or cracks. If the tray has been subjected to extreme heat or heavy impact, the guide rails for the float may be slightly pinched, causing the float to jam. If warped, the tray assembly (Part #BES870) may need replacement.
- Inspect the Float Seal: Check if the float itself has a crack. If water leaks into the hollow center of the plastic float, it will lose buoyancy and may behave erratically, though this usually causes it to stay *down* rather than stay *up*. If the float feels heavy or "sloshy," it must be replaced.
- Manual Reset: Gently push the red tab down with your finger. If you feel significant resistance or a "gritty" sensation, there is still debris inside the chamber that requires further cleaning with a pipe cleaner or thin brush.
Heads Up
- Avoid the Dishwasher: Never put the drip tray or the float assembly in the dishwasher. The high heat can warp the plastic and the harsh detergents can strip the lubricants from the float's guide rails, making it more prone to sticking.
- Weekly Purge: To prevent sludge buildup, rinse the drip tray and the grind separator under hot running water at least once a week, even if the indicator hasn't popped up.
- Dry Before Reassembly: Ensure the float chamber is completely dry before reinserting the assembly to prevent surface tension from temporarily sticking the float to the walls of the housing.
- Check the Seal: While the tray is out, wipe the area where the tray meets the machine to ensure no coffee oils are leaking into the internal chassis of the BES870XL.
