Diagnosis
This issue is typically caused by a failure of the group head gasket (the thick silicone O-ring) or a buildup of compacted coffee oils and grounds behind the shower screen that prevents the 3-way solenoid valve from sealing completely. When the machine is idle, water should be held back by the valve and the seal; however, if the seal has perished, cracked, or become deformed over time, water will slowly seep through the gap and drip from the group head. In some cases, the leak isn't a seal failure but a "slow drip" caused by air pockets in the thermocoil or a malfunctioning 3-way solenoid valve that isn't fully closing. To confirm the cause, run a "blank shot" (without coffee) into a cup. If the dripping stops immediately after the pump shuts off, the seal is likely fine and it is just residual pressure. If it continues to drip steadily for minutes or hours while the machine is idle, the silicone group head gasket is compromised or the solenoid is stuck open.
How to Fix It
To resolve a leaking group head, you must replace the silicone group head gasket and deep-clean the brew head assembly. You will need a replacement gasket (Part #BES870) and a set of Allen keys.
- Power down the machine and unplug it from the wall outlet to ensure no electrical current is running to the heating element.
- Remove the water tank and the drip tray to give yourself a clear workspace and a place for excess water to collect.
- Locate the single screw in the center of the shower screen. Use a toothpick or a small skewer to scrape away any impacted coffee grounds from the screw head so the Allen key can seat fully.
- Insert the short end of the 3mm Allen key into the screw and turn counter-clockwise. Remove the screw and carefully lift out the stainless steel shower screen.
- Using a flat-head screwdriver or a sturdy pick, carefully pry the old, grey silicone gasket out of the group head channel. Be careful not to scratch the aluminum surface of the group head.
- Clean the recessed channel where the gasket sits using a damp microfiber cloth and a small amount of espresso machine cleaner to remove all coffee oils.
- Apply a tiny amount of food-grade silicone lubricant to the new gasket to ensure a tight, airtight seal. Press the new gasket firmly into the channel, ensuring it is seated flush and not pinched.
- Reinstall the shower screen and tighten the center screw firmly, but do not over-torque, as this can warp the screen.
- Plug the machine back in and run two consecutive "Water Only" cycles to prime the pump and verify the leak has stopped.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Clean the 3-Way Solenoid: If the leak persists, the 3-way solenoid valve may have a grain of coffee trapped in the seat. Perform a chemical backflush using a blind filter and a dedicated espresso detergent. Run the pump for 5 seconds, stop for 5 seconds, and repeat 5 times to force cleaning agents through the solenoid valve.
- Inspect the Group Head Screw: Check if the screw holding the screen is stripped. If the screw cannot be tightened fully, the shower screen will not compress the gasket sufficiently, allowing water to bypass the seal. Replace the screw if the threads are worn.
- Check for Scale Buildup: If you live in a hard water area, calcium deposits can prevent the valve from closing. Run a full descaling cycle using a commercial descaler or a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and distilled water to clear internal obstructions.
- Inspect Internal Hosing: If the leak is coming from the *side* of the group head rather than the center screen, a high-pressure silicone hose inside the machine may have a pinhole leak or a loose clamp. This requires opening the chassis and tightening the hose clamps with a small screwdriver.

- Avoid Over-tightening: Over-tightening the shower screen screw can strip the aluminum threads in the group head, which is a costly repair. Tighten until snug, then a quarter-turn more.
- Gasket Longevity: Silicone gaskets generally last 12-24 months depending on usage. If you pull more than 3 shots a day, check the gasket for "flattening" every 6 months.
- Cleaning Routine: Always run a "water purge" for 2 seconds after every shot. This flushes out loose grounds that otherwise settle on the gasket and cause premature wear.
- Water Quality: Use filtered water to prevent lime-scale from crystallizing inside the solenoid valve, which is the primary cause of "phantom" dripping.
