Diagnosis
The blockage in your BES870XL filter basket is caused by a combination of polymerized coffee oils and microscopic coffee fines (extremely small particles) that have become wedged into the laser-cut perforations. Over time, the heat and pressure of the extraction process force these oils into the pores of the stainless steel, where they harden into a waxy, waterproof barrier. This is particularly common if you use dark roast beans, which typically have a higher oil content. You can confirm the clog by performing a "water-only test." Lock the portafilter (without coffee) into the group head and run a 2-ounce shot of hot water. If the water streams out unevenly, drips slowly, or if you see "bubbles" of air trapped in the basket, the holes are obstructed. If the water flows perfectly but your espresso shots are slow or "choking," the issue is likely your grind size rather than a clogged basket.
How to Fix It
To restore full flow to your filter basket, follow this professional deep-cleaning sequence:
- Remove the filter basket from the 54mm portafilter handle. If it is stuck, use a cloth to grip the rim and pull firmly.
- Submerge the basket in a bowl of hot water mixed with a small amount of mild dish soap. Use a soft nylon brush to scrub the interior and exterior surfaces to remove loose debris.
- Locate the cleaning tool kit that came with your BES870XL. Take the thin cleaning pin (the needle-like tool) and manually probe every single hole in the basket. Push the pin through the hole and pull it back out to physically dislodge hardened coffee "plugs."
- Prepare a chemical soak. Dissolve one Breville cleaning tablet (or a generic espresso machine detergent like Cafiza) in 500ml of boiling water.
- Submerge the basket completely in this solution for 30 to 60 minutes. This chemical reaction breaks down the polymerized oils that the pin cannot reach.
- Remove the basket and rinse it under high-pressure hot water for at least 60 seconds. Ensure you rinse the underside (the exterior) of the basket, as oils often accumulate there.
- Dry the basket with a lint-free microfiber cloth and re-insert it into the portafilter.
If That Didn't Work
- Ultrasonic Cleaning: If the clogs are severe, place the basket in an ultrasonic cleaner for 10 minutes. The high-frequency vibrations shake loose microscopic particles trapped in the laser-cut holes that chemical soaking cannot reach.
- White Vinegar Soak: If you suspect mineral buildup (scale) is contributing to the clog, soak the basket in a solution of 50% white distilled vinegar and 50% warm water for two hours. This dissolves calcium deposits that may be narrowing the holes.
- The "Backflush" Method: Place the basket in the portafilter and lock it into the machine. Use the blind filter (the one with no holes) and run a cleaning cycle with a tablet. While this primarily cleans the group head, the high pressure helps clear the interface between the basket and the shower screen.
- Basket Replacement: If you have used abrasive steel wool or a metal scrub brush on the basket, you may have damaged the precision holes. If the holes appear jagged or enlarged, the basket is compromised and must be replaced with a genuine Breville 54mm double-wall or single-wall basket.
Heads Up
- Dishwasher Warning: Never place the filter basket or the portafilter handle in the dishwasher. The harsh chemicals will strip the finish and can cause the stainless steel to pit or oxidize, permanently ruining the extraction quality.
- Avoid Abrasives: Do not use steel wool or scouring pads on the basket. These create micro-scratches that actually trap more coffee oils, making future clogs happen faster.
- Daily Maintenance: After every single shot, "knock" the puck out and rinse the basket under hot water. If you leave coffee grounds in the basket for hours, the oils harden, making them significantly more difficult to remove.
- Grinder Calibration: If you find your baskets clogging every few days, check your grind. If the grind is too fine (approaching powder), it can "blind" the basket, forcing fines into the holes and causing premature blockages.
