the ice tastes weird or like plastic, even after running the clean cycle

— asked by Taylor

DIAGNOSIS Odors are leaching from new plastic components or the silicone water lines into the water. This is common in the first few weeks of use.

FIX Do a deep-clean flush. Run the self-clean cycle with a baking soda solution (2 tablespoons baking soda dissolved in the full tank of warm water). After that, run 2-3 additional clean cycles using only fresh cold water. Make and discard ice from 3-4 full batches afterward.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Check your source water. If you're using tap water with high chlorine or mineral content, the taste will carry into the ice. Switch to filtered or bottled water in the tank for a batch to test.

HEADS UP Never store the ice in the machine's basket for more than 24 hours for best taste. For long-term storage, transfer ice to an airtight container in the freezer. Stale ice absorbs odors from the kitchen.
