Instead of cycling off once the plate reaches the target temperature (typically around 175°F to 185°F), the element remains energized continuously. This "runaway heating" occurs because the thermostat has either physically warped or the electrical contacts have welded shut, preventing the circuit from breaking. You can confirm this by leaving the machine on for 30 minutes without coffee in the carafe; if the plate is too hot to touch for more than a second or if you see smoke/discoloration on the glass carafe bottom, the thermal regulation system has failed. This is not normal operation and poses a significant risk of scorching the coffee and potentially damaging the glass carafe through thermal shock.
How to Fix It
Because the heating element and the thermostat are integrated into the chassis of the 49904 model, there is no external adjustment knob to lower the temperature. The fix requires a hardware replacement or a change in usage patterns:
- Immediately disconnect the unit from the 120V AC power outlet to prevent further overheating of the internal wiring.
- Inspect the bottom of the glass carafe for "burnt-on" residue. If present, soak the carafe in a mixture of white vinegar and baking soda to remove the carbonized coffee, as this buildup can create hotspots.

- Voltage Check: If you are using a high-voltage surge protector or a voltage regulator, try plugging the machine directly into a wall outlet. In rare cases, inconsistent voltage can cause erratic behavior in bimetallic strips, though this is less common than a hardware failure.
- Professional Component Replacement: If you are skilled in electronics, you can open the chassis to locate the thermal fuse. However, this requires specific high-temperature replacement parts that are not sold by the manufacturer to consumers, making this a high-risk modification.

- Power Management: Always unplug the FlexBrew Trio when not in use. The "Auto-Off" feature may be bypassed if the thermostat is defective, meaning the plate could stay hot indefinitely.
