When you trigger the single-serve cycle, the pump creates a vacuum to pull water from the tank; if the black rubber O-ring gasket at the base of the reservoir is pinched, worn, or improperly seated, water is forced outward by the pressure differential, pooling at the bottom of the machine. Another common cause is a hairline crack in the internal plastic water delivery line that leads specifically to the single-serve brew head. Because the full-carafe side uses a different flow path, a leak that only occurs during single-serve brewing confirms that the failure point is located after the primary pump but before the brew head assembly. You can confirm this by placing a dry paper towel under the machine and running a "water-only" cycle on the single-serve side; if the towel saturates immediately, the seal is compromised.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to isolate and resolve the leak:
- Unplug the unit from the wall outlet and allow it to cool completely to avoid steam burns.
- Lift the removable water reservoir straight up and out of the machine.
- Inspect the circular black rubber gasket located at the bottom center of the reservoir. Use a flashlight to check for "flat spots," tears, or mineral buildup (white calcium deposits) that prevent a flush seal.
- If debris is present, clean the gasket and the receiving port in the machine using a damp microfiber cloth and a mild vinegar solution to remove scale.
- Check the reservoir's seating mechanism. Ensure the tank is pushed down firmly until you feel a definitive "click" or seat. If the tank wobbles, the locking tabs are worn, and the seal will fail under pressure.
- If the gasket is cracked or missing, you must replace the reservoir assembly (Part #49904-RES) as the gasket is integrated into the tank housing.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Brew Head Seal: Inspect the area where the K-Cup pod is inserted. If the needle assembly is clogged or the upper gasket is warped, water can divert and run down the internal chassis, making it appear as though the leak is coming from the bottom. Use a needle or paperclip to clear any coffee grounds from the exit needle.
- Internal Hose Re-seating: If you are comfortable opening the chassis, check the silicone tubing connecting the pump to the single-serve manifold. These hoses can slip off their plastic nipples due to heat expansion. Push the hose firmly back onto the barb and secure it with a small zip-tie or hose clamp.
- Pump Valve Failure: If water is leaking from the very bottom of the unit near the power cord, the internal pump seal may have perished. This usually happens after 2-3 years of use. If the pump housing is wet, the pump assembly must be replaced.
- Descale the System: Heavy calcium buildup in the internal valves can prevent the "shut-off" mechanism from closing fully after a brew. This causes water to slowly drip into the base for several minutes after the cycle ends. Run a full descaling cycle using a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution.
