DIAGNOSIS The silicone sealing ring on the underside of the lid has swollen or become misaligned, creating excessive friction. This is often caused by dishwasher heat.
FIX
- Remove the clear plastic center piece of the lid (the fill cap).
- Pop out the large black silicone ring from the main lid.
- Wash and dry the ring thoroughly, then ensure it's seated perfectly in its channel in the lid—no rolling or bulging.
- Apply a tiny amount of food-safe mineral oil or vegetable oil to the outer edge of the silicone ring to lubricate it. Wipe off any excess.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The lid or jar lip may be warped from impact or extreme heat. Check for any visible cracks or distortions. A warped lid won't seal properly and is a safety hazard; it must be replaced.
HEADS UP Hand-wash the lid, especially the silicone seal. The dishwasher's heat cycle is the primary cause of silicone swelling and degradation.
