If this path is obstructed, the motor works harder to overcome the resistance, leading to a high-pitched whine or a "struggling" rattling sound as the motor reaches its maximum RPM without sufficient airflow.
This is most commonly caused by "bridge" formations—where clumps of pet hair, cardboard scraps, or large debris lodge themselves in the throat of the dock's suction port. Additionally, if the disposable dust bag inside the dock is nearly full or has a collapsed seal, the air cannot escape efficiently, creating backpressure that makes the motor sound strained. You can confirm this by checking if the robot's bin is still partially full after a "successful" emptying cycle; if debris remains, you have a confirmed airflow blockage.
How to Fix It
To resolve the suction strain and restore quiet operation, follow these precise steps:
- Clear the Dock Port: Power down the dock and unplug it from the wall. Use a flashlight to inspect the circular suction intake port on the base of the dock. If you see a clump of hair or a piece of plastic wedged in the throat, use a pair of long-nose pliers or a flexible bottle brush to physically extract the debris.
- Inspect the Dust Bag Seal: Open the dock's front cover and remove the disposable dust bag. Check the cardboard collar of the bag to ensure it is seated perfectly flush against the plastic intake rim. If the bag is more than 75% full or feels heavy, replace it immediately with a genuine Roborock replacement bag, as generic bags often have lower permeability, increasing motor noise.
