washer makes a loud grinding noise during the spin cycle, sounds like metal on metal.

DIAGNOSIS That's the spider arm cracked or corroded. It's the large three-armed bracket that holds the inner tub to the shaft. It fails from rust.

FIX This is not a user-serviceable fix. You must replace the inner tub assembly (part DC97-15232A). It requires disassembling the entire washer. Call a tech. It's a known failure point on this model.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK A less likely cause is a foreign object like a bra wire caught between the inner tub and outer tub. You might see scratches inside. Try tilting the washer and looking underneath with a flashlight.

HEADS UP Continuing to run it with a broken spider arm will destroy the tub bearings and shaft. It will eventually stop spinning altogether.
